Albania is a country situated in the western Balkans, on the shores of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Albania borders on Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia in the north and east and on Greece in the south-east. Albania is separated from Italy by the Otranto Straits. The area of Albania is 28,748 sq km.

Relief. Albania is considered a mountainous country. Mountains stretch from northwest to southeast. The North Albanian Alps, situated in the far north, is the most rugged and difficult region of all mountainous areas of the country. The highest point of the North Albanian Alps is Mount Ezertsa (2,694 m). Further to the south lies the Mirdita plateau. To the east lies the country's highest point, Mount Korabit (2,764 m), part of the Korab Range, on the Yugoslavian border. In the extreme south, a rather narrow coastal plain extends in the Saranda district.

Mountains. The Pindus is a mountain system in the West Balkan Peninsula, in northern Greece and Albania. It is found between Thessaly and Epirus, to the south-west of the Bora-Dag Range. It consists of a series of ridges separated by deep river valleys. The massif extends from north to south over a distance of about 200 km. It is over 2000 m high; its highest peak is Mount Emolikas (2,637 m). The Pindus serves as a watershed in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula between the basins of the Aegean and Ionian Seas, from Lake Ohrid to the south. In these areas, there are national parks: the Pindus Natural Park and the Vikos-Aoos Park.

Rivers. The Drin is the longest river of Albania (282 km), which runs through all of northern Albania. Other important rivers include the Mati and the Shkumbini.

Lakes. In the border areas of Albania are three major tectonic lakes: Shkoder (360 sq km), Ohrid (311 sq km) and Prespa. Lake Shkoder lies on the border with Montenegro, while Lake Ohrid lies on the Macedonian border. Other major lakes include Belsh (45 sq km) and Allaman (22 sq km).

Reserves and National Parks. In Albania, there are six national parks and 24 nature reserves and natural monuments:

The Khosrov Preserve, where you can see many endemic animals (including such rare breeds as the mountain lynx and the Syrian bear).

Sightseeing. Albania boasts a number of spectacular natural sights, historical places and cultural monuments:

Tirana is the Albanian capital, whose sights include the Museum of National Culture, the Museum of Natural History and the Gallery of Art;

The city of Shkoder (Skutari) is one of the oldest cities in Europe and traditional cultural heg center;

Gjirokastra is a picturesque historic city that lies on the mountain slope above the bank of the Drin River. The city was well known as a major trade center by the 13th century. In Gjirokastra, you can visit the Museum of arms, the Museum of the National Liberation Movement, the Ethnographic Museum, the Mekate mosque and old Turkish baths;

Korça is the largest carpet-making center of Albania, founded by Greeks in ancient times;

In Durres (Italian Duracco), there is an ancient city founded by Greeks in 627 BC;

Berat is the second most important historic city in Albania after Gjirokastra, and sometimes it is called the City of a Thousands Windows.

Tourism.

Saranda is a tourist city on the coast of the Ionian Sea, opposite the Greek island of Corfu, which, apart from its beaches and nice seaside, offers many interesting historic sights.

Vlora is a resort in the south-west of Albania, where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet.

Arzni is a spa resort, which is famous for its carbon dioxide hydrocarbonate and chloride sodium mineral waters.

Climate. Albania has a subtropical mediterranean climate. For coastal plains, prolonged hot and dry summers and mild rather wet winters are very common. The average temperature in July is 25°C, while in August it ranges from 17°C to 31°C. The temperatures of January vary from 2°C to 12°C. The amount of precipitation that the coastal areas receive is about 1,000-1,350 mm a year, while it reaches up to 2,500 mm in the mountainous areas of the north.
