China is a country in central and eastern Asia. China borders on North Korea and Russia in the north-east, Russia and Mongolia in the north, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the west and India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam in the south. Near its coast, China has a large number of islands, the largest of which are Taiwan and Hainan. China ranks third in the world in terms of its area - 9.6 million sq km. The capital of China is Beijing.

Relief. In the west, China has an elevated mountainous terrain, but as it approaches the sea, it becomes gradually flatter. This is a favorable feature as it brings the streams of humid maritime air deep into the country; on the other hand, this caused most of China's rivers to flow from west to east.

Mountains. There are three major orographical areas in China: the south-western Tibetan Plateau reaching over 2,000 m in height; the northward area of high mountains and plains, whose height ranges from 200 to 2,000 m, and low-lying accumulative plains (below 200 m) and low mountains in the northeast, east and south of the country.

The Tibetan Plateau takes up over a fourth of China's territory and includes the Tibetan Autonomous Region, the Qinghai Province and the western Sichuan Province. The western and central highlands, over 4,000 m high, are justly called the “roof of the world”.

The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, which is significantly lower (an average height of 1,800-2,100 m) is a continuation of the Tibetan Plateau, which extends to the south and south-east of the Sichuan basin.

Tai Shan is a mountain in the Shandong Province of China with a height of 1,545 m. Mount Tai Shan has great cultural and historical significance and is one of the five Daoist Holy Mountains.

Udan Shan is a small mountain range in the Hubei Province, which is situated near the industrial city of Shiyan.

Hua Shan is another of the five Daoist Holy Mountains in China; it is found in the Shaanxi Province near the town of Huain, a regional center. This mountain is famous for its exquisite picturesque rocks and its tricky and dangerous ascent routes. A mountain path connects many peaks to the highest one, 2 100 m.

Qin Chen Shan is a mountain near Chengdu, the Sichuan Province of China, where in 143 BC Zhang Lin founded the first Daoist monastery in history and thus turned the philosophy of Daoism into a religious teaching.

Depressions. In the north-east of the Tibetan Plateau, at an altitude of 2,700-3,000 m, lies the Tsai Dam Depression, rimmed by the Kunlun Mountains in the south and the Altyntag and Qiliang Shan Ranges in the north.

In Xinjiang, north of the Kunlun Mountains, there are two large internal drain basins, the Tarim and the Jungar Depressions.

Rivers. In China, there are a lot of rivers and their total length is 220,000 km. The rivers of China form internal and external water systems. The main rivers of China include the Yangtze, the Yellow River, the Heilong Jiang, the Zhu Jiang, the Lan Tsan Kiang and the Yalu Jiang Po and the Nu Jiang.

Lakes. In China, there are a great number of lakes, with a total area of 80,000 sq km. There are also thousands of artificial lakes, water reservoirs. All lakes in China can be divided into external and internal lakes. External lakes include freshwater lakes, such as Poyang, Dongting and Taihu. For domestic include salt lakes, the largest of which is Lake Qinghai. China’s major lakes include Qinghai, Xingkai, Poyang, Dongting, Taihu, Hulunhu, Hongze, Namtso and Siling Co.

National Parks. The national parks of China include the Putuoshan National Park, the Sanquingshan Mountains, the Uishan, the Utaishan, the Huanlun, the Huangshan, the Emeishan, the Jiuhuashan and the Yulong Xueshan parks.

Sightseeing. China is a wonderful country, which tries to preserve the legacy of the past - splendid Buddhist temples, monasteries, monuments and more.

The sights of Beijing, the Chinese capital, which are most exciting to visit, include the Purple Forbidden City, now the Gugun Museum in Beijing, which was also the last residence of Chinese emperors. The most popular attraction is the Great Wall of China. It extends from the Jiayuguan Gate (the Gansu Province) in the west to the Shanhaiguan Gate (the Hebei Province) in the east and spreads for 6,350 km. The Temple of Heaven in Beijing is considered a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture.

Tibet is a mysterious and almost inaccessible area, which is isolated from the outside world by extremely high mountains.

Shanghai is China's largest city, which has a special charm and a unique atmosphere.

Hong Kong is the largest port and a major industrial, financial and trade center, a celebrity among the cities in the Asia-Pacific region.

In Harbin, places of particular interest include the Singapore Water Park, the Park of Tigers, the Zhaolin Park (Zhaolin Gun Yuan) and a Buddhist temple.
