Novosibirsk is a city in Russia, the administrative center of the Novosibirsk Oblast and the Siberian Federal District, a major industrial, communications, scientific and cultural centre. The city is situated on the Ob Plateau, which adjoins the Ob River valley near a water reservoir. The population of Novosibirsk is 1.4 million people.
Historical Facts. The settlement that later become known as the city of Novosibirsk, was founded in 1893 as the future site of a railway bridge crossing the Ob River. During its history, it changes its name several times. First, the place where the city was to be built, was called Novaya Derevnya and then it was renamed as Novy Posyolok, which was later named Alexandrovsky Posyolok, in honour of St. Alexander Nevski.
Rivers and Water Reservoirs. The following waterways and reservoirs are situated in and near Novosibirsk: the Ob River, the Novosibirsk Water Reservoir "The Ob Sea", the Berd River (it flows into the Novosibirsk Reservoir), the Inya River (a tributary of the Ob River, it flows through Novosibirsk), the Om River, the Bugotak River, the Elban River, the Ik River (it flows along its whole length through the Salairsky Ridge), the Suenga River, Lake Ubinskoye and Lake Chany.
Recreation Areas. The recreation areas in the Novosibirsk region include: the Dovolensky health resort in the Dovolensk District, the Krasnozyorski health resort in the Krasnozyorsk District, the resorts Baraba and Karachi in the Chanovsk District, the Om resort in Kuibyshev, and the resorts Berdsky, Rassvet, Parus, Sibiryak and Sosnovka in the town of Bersk and its vicinity.
Sightseeing. Krasny Prospekt, the main traffic artery of the Siberian capital; the Chapel in Krasny Prospekt, St. Alexander Nevski's Cathedral, the Novosibirsk Institute of Arts, a model of "the Steamship Stagecoach" by the Cherepanov brothers, the Local History and Life Museum and others.
Tourism. The Ob Sea is a place for active rest and and the venue of a sailing competition for the Cup of Russia and the Cup of the Ob Sea, held every year. Novosibirsk offers different kinds of active rest: the climbers' club Kaskad and the sports and recreation centre Novososedovo. Water tourism is very common along the Bugotak, Elban, Ik and Suenga rivers. In the Novosibirsk oblast, the Klychi ski resort (9 km away from the city) and the Novososedovo recreation center are situated.
Climate. Novosibirsk lies within the continental climate zone; the average annual air temperature is +0.2°C. The average air temperature in January is −18.8°C, while the temperature in July is +19°C.
