Yekaterinburg (called Sverdlovsk from 1924 to 1991) is the administrative centre of the Ural Federal District, the capital of the Sverdlovsk region, one of the largest cities in Russia. Yekaterinburg is situated in Asia, on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals, on the banks of the Iset River (it flows into the Tobol). The population of Yekaterinburg is over 1.3 million people.
Historical Facts. In the spring of 1723, Emperor Peter the Great issued a decree to build on the banks of the Iset River what was to become the largest iron works. The shop carried out a test launch of finery battle hammers, so November 7, 1723, became the birthday of the city.
Rivers. The rivers flowing in the Yekaterinburg area include the Chusovaya, the Iset, the Sylva, the Vogulka, the Bisert, the Pyshma, the Neiva and the Bagaryak. The Chusovaya River is one of the most beautiful rivers in the Sverdlovsk region. The majestic Ural caves rise along its shores and it is a piece of nature untouched by man.
Lakes and Reservoirs. The largest water reservoirs found in the Ekaterinburg area include: Lake Shartash, the most popular vacation spot for the natives of Yekaterinburg Lake Peshchanoye, the Verkhnemakarovskoe Reservoir, Lake Baltym, Lake Tavatuy, the Upper Neyva Reservoir, the Volchikha Reservoir and the Upper Iset Reservoir. What is peculiar about Lake Talkov Kamen is that its shores form high, almost vertical ledges 20-30 m long. Ganina Yama, a popular attraction, is found near Lake Isetskoe. Lakes Silach, Sungul, Kirety, Irtyash, Itkul, Okunkul, Ulagach, Argazi and Chebarkul and the Verkhneuralski Reservoir are popular places for fishing.
Tourism. In the Sverdlovsk region, sporting tourism enjoys the greatest popularity thanks to a great diversity of natural resources. The most popular tourist attractions are:
- Mount Volchikha, the highest mountain near Yekaterinburg (526 m high);
- Chyortovo Gorodishche (City of the Devil), a string of rocks on top of low mountains, near the Iset railway station on the railway line from Yekaterinburg to Nizhny Tagil;
- The Staraya Linza Quarry, an abandoned quarry in Shabry (25 km from Yekaterinburg), where you can see waterfalls, stepped walls and abandoned equipment;
- The Staraya Utka District, a popular place for walking tours;
- The Koptelovsky Museum of agricultural history and rural life;
- The Olenyi Ruchyi Natural Park, located in the southwest of the Sverdlovsk region, in the bottom of the Serga River;
- Cave Druzhba, the biggest cave in the area, over 500 m long, and the Big Karst Chasm;
- The towns Nevyansk and Tavolgi, where the famous Nevyanskaya tower is found;
- The town of Miass, which is famous for the Ilmensky Reserve and an ancient city of stone idols, located in this area.
Alpine Skiing. Yekaterinburg is situated near a number of skiing resorts: the Uktus sports centre, Mount Listvennaya, Stozhok, Mount Belaya, the Motaikha (Iset) base, Mount Pilnaya, Mount Volchiha and Mount Tyoplaya.
Sightseeing. Yekaterinburg has over 600 historical and cultural monuments, all of which are well known: the City Basin dam on the Iset River, Rastorguev-Kharitonov Estate, Tarasov Estate on the City Pond embankment, the Literary Quarter, the Ascension Church, the Church on the Blood, Zheleznov Estate, the active Novo-Tikhvin Convent and St. Alexander’s Cathedral.
Flora and Fauna. The suburban forest in this area includes mainly pines, spruces and pine, but there are also birches, fir-trees, cedars, larches, aspens and lime-trees. The forests abound in mushrooms, berries and medicinal plants. The forest animal life includes elks, roe deer, squirrels, hares and wolves; the birdlife is also rich and represented by wood grouse, black grouse, hazel grouse, jays, waxwings and bullfinches. The lakes are rich in fish, such as perch, rudd, carp, ide, bream, pike and chub.
Climate. The climate in Yekaterinburg is continental. The average temperature in January is 15.5°C; however, it can drop to -50°C on some frosty days. The average July temperature is +17.4°C, but sometimes it rises to +40°C.
