Finland is situated in Northern Europe. Finland borders with Russia in the east, with Sweden in the west and with Norway in the north. The coasts of Finland are washed by the Gulf of Finland in the south and by the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea in the west. Finland is subdivided into five provinces: Southern Finland, Eastern Finland, Western Finland, the Province of Oulu, and Lappi or Lapland. The total area of Finland is 338,000 sq km.

Mountains. Korvatunturi is a three-headed hill at the border of Finnish Lapland and Murmansk Region of Russia. As the folklore says, it is Korvantunturi where Joulupukki - the Finnish Father Christmas – lives.

Ruka is a mountain (491 m) in Kuusamo where from the 1950s functions the homonymous and one of the major skiing resorts of the country.

Rivers. The Vuoksi is a river, or rather a hydrologic system including a set of lakes and channels in Finland and Russia as well. It is the longest river of the Karelian Isthmus.

Other rivers passing through the territory of Finland are Ilmenjoki, Oulujoki, Kajaani, Kemijoki, Kokemäenjoki, Kymijoki, Luttojoki, Paatsjoki, Tohmajoki, Tuntsajoki, Torneonjoki, Janisjoki.

Lakes. Lake Bodominjärvi is situated near Espoo. The lake is approximately 3 km long and about 1 km wide.

Other lakes of Finland are Keitele, Vesijärvi, Inari, Virmajärvi, Oulujärvi, Päijänne, Saimaa.

National Parks and Reserves. Isojärvi National Park is situated in the centre of the triangle formed by the cities of Tampere, Lahti and Jyväskylä and close to the famous ski resort of Himos, thus it can be of interest to tourists coming here in any season.

Sightseeing. Helsinki – the capital of Finland – is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, thus in spite of its status of a port city it is famous for its fresh air, wonderful landscapes and interesting “northern” architecture.

The Isle of Seurasaari is located 5 km to the centre of Helsinki. On the island one can visit an open-air ethnographic museum.

Among the places of interest in Hamenlinna (70 km to the west of the capital) are the first in Finland Prison Museum built on the place of the old jail, a Medieval castle (the XIII century) and the house-museum of Sibelius.

Lahti (75 km to the northeast of the capital) is famous as an excellent centre of winter games with the first-class sports centre and Ski Museum.

The oldest city of Finland and the capital of the country until 1812, the city of museums and fjords – Turku – lies on the much indented southwestern coast of the country facing the Ahvenanmaa archipelago.

Central Finland and Lakeland are the best places in Europe for active holidays. Hundreds of picturesque lakes and rivers, thick forests and mild climate attract millions of tourists.

Lapland is one of the most exotic and popular places in Finland. The capital of Lapland is Rovaniemi. This city, close to the Polar circle, is the home of Santa Claus and one of the best places of winter holidays.

Puha (125 km from Rovaniemi) is famous for 160 km of first-rate pistes.

Vuokatti is situated on the woody hills of Eastern Finland. It is a famous international skiing centre and a very “versatile” resort of the country.

The Suomenlinna (Sveaborg) group of islands is the most popular among the tourists place in the capital and the favourite resting place of the residents of Helsinki.

Tourism. Being a northern country, Finland offers unlimited possibilities of winter rest. There are several dozens of sports centres in various parts of the country: downhill skiing sites, arranged pistes for cross-country skiing, dog-team driving, and the genuine Finnish sauna.

The southern and the western parts of Finland face the sea. Contrary to the stereotypes, summer in Finland can be quite hot, thus both natives and tourists bathe gladly. The tourists` favourite cities of Finland– Helsinki and Turku – also have nice beaches. The numerous lakes of Finland attract with cleanness and coolness in a hot summer day as well.

Climate. The climate of Finland is moderate, transitional to continental. The average temperatures of January in the best part of Finland are from -5°C to -7°C. The summer is tepid, especially to the north of the Gulf of Bothnia. The average temperature of July varies from +15°C to +17°C. Winters are long. The polar night in northern regions of Lapland lasts about 50 days.
