Ireland occupies the homonymous island (its greater part) in the Atlantic Ocean near the northwestern coast of Great Britain. The length of the island from north to south is 465 km, from east to west – 285 km. The shortest distance from Ireland to Great Britain is 21 km – straight from the Torr Head Cape near Ballicastle to Mall of Kintair in Scotland. The total area of Ireland is about 70,300 sq km. Ireland also includes the provinces Leinster, Munster, Connacht, and part of Ulster.

Relief. The whole of the centre of the country is a hilly plain abundant in lakes and turfaries. The central plain rises towards the edges of the island and changes to low mountains. The highest peak of Ireland – Carrauntoohil (1,041 m) – is in the Kerry Mountains in the southwest. The coasts of the island are heavily indented by fjords, bays, gulfs and deep estuaries of rivers.

Mountains. Only one fifth of the country lies higher than 50 m, with some peaks exceeding 900 m. The higher mountain zone consists of numerous short and separated ridges. Among them only the Kerry Mountains in the southwest and the Donegal in the northwest distinctly stretch from the northeast to the southwest. In the Donegal and Antrim mountain ranges run along the shore. All of them except the volcanic Antrim Mountains were formed in the Palaeozoic era. The highest peak of Ireland – Carrauntoohil (1,041 m) – is in the Macgillycuddy`s Reeks to the southwest of Killarney. The Wicklow Mountains with the highest peak Lugnaquilla (924 m) are located to the south of Dublin. The Knockmealdown Mountains rise to 795 m between Waterford and Tipperary.

Rivers. The Shannon is the longest river in Ireland that divides the west of the country (mainly the Konnacht Province) from the east and the south (Leinster and the best part of Munster). Other rivers are the Erne, the Suir, the Nore, the Barrow, the Galway, the Sligo, the Boyne, the Lagan, the Bann, and the Liffey.

Lakes. Lough Neigh is the largest lake in Ireland, its area is 396 sq km.other lakes are Lough Derg, Lough Outer, Upper Lough Erne, Lough Erne, Lough Mack, Lough Corrib, and Lough Conn.

National Parks and Reserves. Such National Parks should be mentioned as Killarney National Park, Boorne Vincent, Phoenix, and Karra Reserve.

Sightseeing. The capital of the country – Dublin – is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is situated in the vast Liffey Valley around the picturesque Bay of Dublin. The beautiful Dublin Mountains and beaches are close to the city. The coastal region takes pride in such famous places of interest as the tower of the fort Martello with the Museum of James Joyce, the Blackrock Park, and Brighton Vail.

Bru na Boinne – the town near the Boyne River bend – is world-famous for its archeological monuments of burial places Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth Newgrange (See na Bru).

Waterford is located in the southeastern part of Ireland. It is the first city founded in the country by the Vikings (914), and is famous for the ancient city walls, narrow paths and the Norman tower Reginald Tower.

Cork is the city on the southern coast. There, on the territory of the University of Cork on the banks of the Lee River, the well-known summer camp ATC is located.

The Clare County has a unique place – Barren Region. Underground caves, cracks, springs and abysses are the main places of interest of the cave-pitted land.

The Aran Islands are three: Inishmore, Inishman and Inishire. These are long and low strips of “lunar landscape” with severe but wonderfully beautiful scenery.

Tourism. Water sports, such as sporting and amateur fishing, yachting and surfing are very popular in Ireland. Many people come here to enjoy golfing on the vast fields. Still, the real passion of the Irish stays equestrian sport.

Limerick is one of the best places for entertainment.

Climate. The climate of Ireland is marine, without considerable regional differences. The temperatures are unvaried, the precipitation abundant, cloudiness high and humidity elevated. The average temperature in July is +15°C, in January -6°. The greatest amount of precipitation is observed on the western slopes of the mountains facing the Atlantic Ocean, the smallest – on the plains in the eastern part of the island.
