Mozambique is a state in the southeast of Africa and a former Portuguese colony. In the east its coasts are washed by the Indian Ocean, in the north the country borders with Tanzania, in the northeast with Malawi and Zambia, in the west with Zimbabwe, in the south with Swaziland and the Republic of the South Africa. The area of the country is 801,600 km.
Relief. The relief of Mozambique is various and picturesque. Half of the country lies on the Mozambique Depression which in the south is 400 km wide and in the north narrows to several kilometers in width. The north of the state is occupied by the Nyasa Plateau 500-1,000 m high on average with separate mountains up to 2,000 m high. The plateau abruptly ends near the homonymous lake. In the west and northwest of the country the crystalline plateaus Mozambique, Angoni, and Motabeli with the highest peak of the state Mount Binga (2,436 m) are situated.
Rivers. Mozambique has a dense network of rivers flowing to the Indian Ocean: the Zambezi, the Inkomati, the Ligonia, the Limpopo, the Lurio, the Ruwuma, the Sawi. The Zambezi is the major river. The majority of the rivers shallow in winter.
Lakes. Except for the natural sweet lake Nyasa, Mozambique has no large lakes. In the rainy period season lakes – pans – appear. 2% of the territory is covered by swamps.
National Parks and Reserves. One of the most beautiful places on the globe is the Marine National Park “Bazaruto Archipelago” 10 km from the coastline – with clear blue waters, sandy shores, palm bush and ancient coral reefs. Here on can do scuba diving and nice fishing. The area between the mainland and these 150 islands is now protected as a world-class natural reserve. Other national parks of interest are Gorongoza, Banhine, Zinave, which possess a collection of natural places of interest and the unique fauna.
Sightseeing. Mozambique is one of the most ancient states in the world. People have been living here for more than 2 mln years. The first fossil remains of Homo Sapiens were found exactly here.
The capital of the country – Maputo – earlier was famous as a very beautiful city appreciated by the travelers at the same level as Capetown and Rio de Janeiro, but after almost 20 years of war and hardship the city went to rack and ruin.
Beira – the second largest city in Mozambique 880 km to the capital – is the main port and the terminal point of the trans-African railroad. Its compact centre and old Mediterranean-style buildings give the city a special charm.
The seaside city of Pemba takes pride in its interesting architecture, especially in Baicsa – the Old Town – and the vivid atmosphere of its streets. The majority of the tourists come here because of the luxurious beaches, especially Wimbi (or Wimbe) and coral reefs so close to the shore that one can easily reach them swimming.
500 km to the northwest of the shore the Zambezi is blocked by the giant Dam de Cahora Basso built in the 1970s. It is one of the greatest projects of civil construction in Africa. The dam in the amazing scenery of a gorge created an enormous lake Lago de Cahora Bassa 270 km long which stretches upstream to the confluence of the Zambezi and Luangwa on the border with Zambia.
The island Il de Mozambique is a tiny piece of land 3 km from the mainland and connected with the latter by a bridge. Earlier it was the capital of the Portuguese colony in the eastern Africa. Nowadays Il is famous for its numerous mosques and churches and a Hindu temple.
Tourism. Tourists are attracted to the country mainly by the nice sandy beaches. Beautiful coasts Tofu, Moma, Langoxe, Lurio and Barra Cape quite recently were legendary places and now quickly restore their fame. The Tofu region is more accessible and developed, has a hotel and well-organized holiday infrastructure, not much touched by the war. Barra is less accessible, but quieter. It enjoys better conditions, such as clear dunes with constant surf on the one side of the cape and mangrove forests and palm groves on the other, where pods of almost tame parrots and monkeys are absolutely ordinary.
Climate. The climate of Mozambique is subequatorial monsoon in the north, tropical etesian in the south. The average temperatures on the Mozambique Depression in January are from +26°С to +30°С, in July from +15°С to +20°С. The precipitation has the form of tropical showers, sometimes occur floods. Two thirds get less than 1,000 mm of rainfall a year and are subject to regular droughts.
