The Republic of Belarus is a country in Eastern Europe. Belarus is situated in Eastern Europe and it borders on Russia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. Its area is 207,600 sq km. It borders on Russia in the east and north, Lithuania and Latvia in the north and north-west, Poland in the west and the Ukraine in the south. The capital of Belarus is Minsk.

Relief. Belarus has a predominantly flat terrain. The average elevation above the sea level is 160 m. In Belarus, there are over 20,000 rivers and brooks and about 11,000 lakes. The largest concentration of lakes is found in the north and north-west of the country. Forests cover about 2/5 of the country’s territory. There are comparatively few large forest tracts here (the largest two are the Bialowieza Pushcha and the Nalibokskaya Pushcha), yet there are no woodless areas either.

Mountains. Mount Dzerzhinskaya is the highest peak in Belarus (345 m high), which is situated on the Minsk uplands near the village of Skirmontovo, the Dzherzhinsk District.

Mount Mayak is situated in the northern part of the National Park and is one of the highest and best viewing points in the Braslav Uplands and also in Belarus. The height of the mountain is 44.7 m above the water edge and 174 m above the sea level.

Rivers. The rivers flowing through Belarus include the Prypyat River with such tributaries as the Tsna, the Moroch, the Sluch, the Styr, the Yaselda, the Pina, the Stizh and the Lan; the Sozh River with its tributaries Besyedz, Basya and Pronya; the Dnieper with its tributaries Berezina and Usha; the Neman with its tributaries Shchara, Svisloch, Ros, Berezina and Kotra; and the West Dvina with its tributaries Stvolna, Drysa, Obol, Luchosa, Ula, Ushacha and Disna.

Lakes. The lakes of Belarus include Dolgoye, Rychy, Soro, Lepel, Volchye, Seno, Kryvoye, Svita, Kroman, Losvida, Syelyava, Snudy, Svityaz, Dolzha, Dryvyaty, Svir, Chyrvonaye, Osveiskoye, Glodovo and Vygonovskoye as well as lake systems such as the Braslav lakes and the Golubiye lakes. Lake Naroch is the largest lake in Belarus. Its surface area is 80 sq km.

Nature Reserves and National Parks. There are a large number of nature reserves and national parks in Belarus: the Bialowieza Pushcha National Park, the Berezina Biosphere Reserve, the Polesye Reserve and many others.

Sightseeing.

Minsk is the capital of Belarus whose well-known sights include the City Hall, the Guest Court, Uniate, Dominican and Bernardine monasteries, the Holy Spirit Cathedral, St. Joseph's Church, the Jesuit College, the Mary Magdalene Church, the Calvary Church, the Zolotogorski Trinity Church, the Alexander Nevsky Memorial Church, the Holy Trinity Church and twelve major museums (including the Great Patriotic War Museum and the Museum of ancient Belarusian art, folk architecture and life).

Brest is a city whose most famous sights include the legendary Brest Fortress, St Nikolai’s Church and the Brest Archaeological Museum.

Grodno is the most picturesque city in the whole of Belarus. There you can see a baroque Catholic church, a Bernardine Renaissance church, the wooden St. Boris and Gleb Church dated 12th century, which is considered the second oldest in Belarus, and the New and the Old Grodno Castles.

Polotsk is a quiet patriarchal town with beautiful embankments and a long history.

Vitebsk could once boast over 30 churches and a thriving cultural life. Its current places of interest include the City Art Museum, which hosts a lot of temporary exhibitions as well as permanent exhibitions of 18-20th century European art. Other places of interest include the Annunciation Church (12th cent.) and the Jesuit College (18th cent.).

Khatyn is a memorable place for every Belarusian, which was a small village burned by Nazis in 1943 together with all the people living in it. Now it is a war memorial.

Nesvizh is one of the oldest towns in Belarus. The town is famous for its city hall, Slutskiye Gates, a old Roman Catholic church and the Radzivill Castle.

Bobruisk is one of the oldest cities of Belarus. In Bobruisk, there are many historical sites and cultural monuments.

Tourism.

• Cycling on the outskirts of Minsk, in the Berezina Reserve, in the Nalibokskaya Pushcha, in the Bialowieza Pushcha, near Lake Goluboye, near the Braslav lakes and in Polesye;
• Water tourism on such lakes and rivers like Naroch, Svitiaz, the Narochanka, the Vilia, the Neman, the Schara, the Isloch, the Pripyat, the Berezina, the Bobr and the Braslav lakes;
• Sailing in the Minsk Sea;
• Equestrian sport in the villages of Ratomka and Tarasovo;
• Parachute jumping in the village of Borovaya;
• Skiing at Raubichi, Staiki, Drozdy and Zyelyonoye;
• Ski jumping and freestyle at Raubichi;
• Downhill skiing at such centers as Alpiyski Sneg (Minsk), Silichy (25 km from Minsk), Logoisk (27 km from Minsk) and Yakutskiye Gory, situated on Mount Dzerzhinskaya (40 km from Minsk);
• Rural tourism in a large number of country estates in Belarus, where people go hunting and fishing or gather medicinal plants.

Climate. The climate of Belarus is moderately continental with mild and humid winters, warm summers and damp autumns. The average January temperature ranges from –4°C to  –8°Ð¡, while the average July temperature can vary from +17°Ð¡ to +19°Ð¡. On average, the annual rainfall that most parts of Belarus receive is about 600–700 mm.
