Kyrgyzstan is situated in the north-eastern part of Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan borders on Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China and Tajikistan. The territory of Kyrgyzstan is 198,500 sq km. Bishkek (Frunze) is the capital as well as the largest city of the country.

Mountains. The Central Tien Shan is the highest and most majestic part of the Tien Shan mountain system, which extends for about 500 km from west to east and for 300 km from north to south. In the part of the Tien Shan, there are such mountain ranges as the Terskei-Ala-Too, the Sarah-Dzhaz, the Kui-Liu, the Tengri-Tag, the Enilchek, the Kakshaal-Too and the Meridional Range with the highest peaks that include Lenin (7,134 m), Victory (7,439 m) and Khan-Tengri (7,010 m). In the north, the Boro Horo Range connects the Tien Shan system with the Jungar Alatau Range.

The Western Tien Shan mountain system lies at the edge of the Tien Shan mountain country. There are much fewer high plateaux here (the Palathon, the Angren, the Ugam and the Karzhantau - all of them are in the west of the region). The highest points of the western Tien Shan are Chatkal Peak (4,503 m) in the Chatkal Range, Mount Manas (4,482 m) in the Talas Alatau and Mount Baubash-Ata (4,427 m) in the western part of the Fergana mountain range.

Mountain Ranges. The mountain chains that lie in Kyrgyzstan include the Kokshaal Range (Victory Peak, 7,439 m), the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range (4,855 m), the Terskey Ala-Too (5,280 m), the Alai (Mount Alai, 5,539m), the Turkestan (Mount Rocky, 5,621m), the Kyungei Ala-Too (4,771 m), the Talas Range (Mount Manas, 4,488 m), the Chon-Alai (Peak Lenin, 7,134 m), the Chatkal (Aflatun, 4,503 m) and the Fergana (Uch-Seyit, 4,940 m).

Rivers. All in all, there are over 40,000 rivers and streams in Kyrgyzstan. Their total length is about 150,000 km and the annual flow is 47 cubic km. The rivers that flow through Kyrgyzstan include the Naryn, the Talas, the Kara-Darya, the Chatkal, the Chu, the Sokh, the Kekemeren, the Isfairam-Sai, the Chui, the Kizilsu, the Aksai, the Sary-Dzhaz, the Kyzyl-Suu, Kekemeren, the Chon-Kemin, the Tyup, the Dzhergalan, the Isfara, the Ak-Buura, the At-Bashi, the Kara-Kuldzha and the Kurshab.

Lakes. The largest lakes of Kyrgyzstan are Lake Issyk-Kul, Son-Kul and Chatyr-Kul. Other lakes found in Kyrgyzstan include Sary-Chelek, Kel-Suu, Kara-Suu, Mertsbakhera, Kulun, Ai-Kel and Kara-Toko.

Lake Issyk-Kul is the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and it is situated at an altitude of 1,609 m above the sea level.

Waterfalls. The waterfalls of Kyrgyzstan include the Koguchken-Suchat, the Abshir-Sai, the Sharkyratma, the Takyr-Tor and the Archaly-Tor Falls as well as the Kuldurek cascade waterfalls.

Nature Reserves. There are a number of reserves in Kyrgyzstan: the Issyk-Kul State Reserve, the Sary Chelek State Biospheric Reserve, the Besh-Aral State Reserve, the Naryn State Reserve, the Karatal-Zhapyryk State Reserve, the Padyshatin State Reserve and the Kulunatin State Reserve.

National Parks. In Kyrgyzstan, there are also a number of national parks: the Ala-Archa Park, the Kyrgyz-Ata Park, the Kara-Shoro Park, the State Besh Tash Park, the Karakol National Park, the Kyrgyz-Ata Park, the Saimaluu Tash State Park and the Salkyntor Public Park.

Sightseeing. In Kyrgyzstan, there is a great diversity of natural monuments and historical sights:

the Chu Valley, where there are such popular sights as Krasnorechensk Hill with the ruins of Zoroastrian buildings, ruins of the ancient city of Balasagun and Burana, a historical and cultural area, which has the famous Burana Tower, the Ak-Beshim hill and Turt-Kul;

The Ala-Archa Valley, where there are relic mountain juniper forests of Asia;

The Ken-Kol burial mounds along the upstream Talas, where the Kumbez-Manas mausoleum is also situated (14th cent.); the Manas reserve and museum and a mosque, which together form the Manas-Ordosu National Historic and Cultural Complex;

Lake Issyk-Kul (Yssyk-Kel), 178 km long and 60 km wide, which has such resorts as Cholpon-Ata and Kara, and towns such as Tyup, Ottuk and Balykchi (Rybache). Also here the famous Altin-Arashan Gorge with the nearby Yssyk-Ata field of mineral waters and majestic canyons, such as Dzholbors and Boom.

The Trans-Issyk-kul area is a popular place, where you can find Saks royal mounds (about 700 BC – 200 AD) and the Kok-Bulak and Karashar burial grounds.

Bishkek (known as Frunze from 1926 to 1991) is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, which lies in the northern part of the country, the Chu Valley at the foot of the Kyrgyz Range. The sights of the city are ancient settlements called Forger Fortress (7th – 14th cent.) and Pishpek (7th-12th cent.) in the north-eastern part of the city.

Osh is the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan, situated in the south-western part of the country, at the northern foot of the Kichi-Alai Range, near the Uzbek border. The main attraction of the city is Sulaiman-Too (Mount Sulaiman).

Tourism. In Kyrgyzstan, the following kinds of tourism are popular:

• Winter hiking in the Terskei Ala-Too Valley (Altyn-Arashan - Kara - Jets-Oguz), at the head of the Inylchek glacier (Karakol - Sary-Dzhaz - Lake Mertsbakher - the upper reaches of the Inylchek glacier), the Kyrghiz Range (Kelter-Kegetinsky, Tuyuk-Shamsinsky, Dzhinalach, Chon-Kelter, Kyzyl-Suu, Kanyrchek and Boom);
• Horse-riding tours in the Dzheti-Oguz, Karakol, Yrdyk and Arashan gorges;
• Hunting in Ak-Shiyrak, Zhylanach and Sary-Dzhaz;
• Alpine tourism in such centers as Chon-Tash, Orlovka, Karakol, Kashka-Suu and Oruu-Sai;
• Mountain tourism on the mountains Khan-Tengri, Victory and Lenin and in the Ala-Archa and Karakol Valleys;
• Rafting on the Chu, the Chon-Kemin and the Kekemeren Rivers;
• Hiking tours in Kichi-Naryn, the Arabel Valley, Toguz-Bulak, in the Ton Pass and the Tosor Pass;
• Car tourism along the Tien Shan, around Lake Issyk-Kul and across the Torugart-Bishkek Pass.

Climate. The climate of Kyrgyzstan is that of temperate latitudes, while the southern parts of the country lie within the subtropical climatic zone. The average monthly temperature in July in Kyrgyzstan is 26°C in the lower valleys and reaches up to 4°C at an altitude of 3,600 m. The average January temperature is from -4°C to -9°C in the low valleys and it goes down up to -28°C in the highlands.
