Nigeria is a country situated in West Africa. Nigeria borders on Benin the west, Niger in the north, Chad in north-east and Cameroon in the east and south-east. In the South, Nigeria is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Nigeria's total area is 923,800 sq km.

Relief. In Nigeria, flattened forms of terrain are common - 2/3 of its territory is leveled plateaus, while the rest of the territory is plains. The highest plateau is the Djos Plateau (1,735 m). The south of the country is dominated by tropical forest, while the north is occupied mostly by savannas.

Mountains. The Adamawa Range is a highland (plateau) in Cameroon, Nigeria and the Central African Republic. The Adamawa Plateau occupies a vast territory between the Benue River in the north-west and the Sanaga River in the south-east. It covers the south-east of Nigeria, the west and the centre of Cameroon and the west of the CAR. It has a volcanic origin; its average height is about 1,000 m. The highest peak is Oku, 3,011 m. There are also other peaks, such as Bambuto (2,740 m) and Mbam (2,335 m).

The Adamawa Mountains is the centre of the highlands, which spread from the west of Cameroon (the Western and North-Western provinces) through the south-east of Nigeria back to Central Cameroon.

Rivers. The rivers flowing through Nigeria include: the Sanaga, the Benue, the Niger, the Kaduna, the Rima, the Sokoto and the Kross.

Lakes. Lake Chad (Tchad, the Arabic Bar-es-Salam) is a drainless relict lake located in Nigeria. The surface of the lake is unstable - usually it is about 27,000 sq km. In the rain season, the area of the lake expands up to 50,000 sq km when flooded, while in the dry season, it shrinks to 11,000 sq km. The rivers falling into the lake include the Shari Rivers in the south, with its large shallow Mbulu delta, the Komadugu-Vaube River and the shallow Bar-el-Gazal River in the east.

Sightseeing.

Lagos occupies almost entirely a state bearing the same name, and consists of a large number of districts connected with one another and separated by highways. The major sight here is markets, which occupy a huge area in Lagos and are mostly found in the open air.

Abudja, the present capital of Nigeria, is 800 km north of Lagos, the former capital. In Abudja, there are a modern complex of administrative buildings, a hotel complex and an international airport.

The Djos Plateau is a unique natural monument of Nigeria, a string of rocks rising out of the green jungles, with flat tops and practically vertical heavily eroded slopes. Their appearance reminds of the famous "Pillar" in the state of Utah, USA, but they are formed by grey and greyish rocks and are in stark contrast with the surrounding green tropical forest.

Ibadan is one of the biggest commercial and industrial centers of the country.

There are such nature reserves as Borgu, Kwiambana, Yankari, etc.

Climate. The climate of Nigeria is monsoon equatorial with the wet and the dry season. During the harmattan season, dust storms are common. The temperature in the inland areas ranges from +20°C to +33°C, while the temperature on the coastal plain varies from +24°C to +28°C. Rainfall reaches 500 mm in the north and the north-east and up to 4,000 mm in the Niger River delta and in the south-east.
