North Korea is a country situated in East Asia, which occupies the Korean Peninsula, the adjacent part of the mainland and about 3,500 islands. North Korea is bounded by the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation and South Korea. North Korea is washed by the Yellow Sea in the west, the Japan Sea in the east, and the Korea Strait in the south.

Relief. About 80% of the country is occupied by mountains, of which more than 50 peaks are higher than 2,000 m. The most famous mountain range in the entire Korean Peninsula is the Kymgansan Mountains, which lie on the border with South Korea, in the Kanvon province.

Mountains. Mountains in North Korea are mostly plateaus and uplands dissected by mountain ranges. In the north of Korea lies the Chanbeksan plateau with Korea's highest mountain, the volcanic peak Pektusan (2,744 m above sea level).

The Kema Plateau (the average height is 1,300 -1,700 m, while the maximum height is 2,520 m) is flanked b the Nannim Range (up to 2,260 m) in the west and the Mahollen Range (up to 2,430 m) in the east.

The highest mountain chains include the Hamgen (up to 2,540 m) and the Pudjolen Ranges (up to 2,151 m).

Eastern Korean mountains include the Kymgansan (Diamond) Mountains as well as such ranges as the Tebeksan (up to 1,708 m), the Kensan (up to 1,219 m) and the Sobek Range (with the highest peak Chirisan, 1,915 m).

The Tebeksan Mountains include a string of relatively short ridges, which extend from north-east to south-west. Between the Kensan and the Sobek ridges lies the extensive Naktongan river basin.

Rivers. There are mainly mountain rivers on the territory of Korea. The longest include the Thebek, the Seoul, the Hangang, the Kumgang and the Naktongan. Other well-known rivers include the Amnokan (Chinese Yalutszyan), the Tumangan (Chinese Tumyntszyan), the Chhonchhongan, the Tennogan, the Yonsangan, the Sodusu, the Namnan, the Tedongan and the Imdjingan.

Lakes. The major lakes of North Korea include Lakes Nanimho, Suphungo, Chandzhinho and Unbon.

Sightseeing.

Pyongyang, or Phenyan, is one of the oldest towns in North-East Asia. One of the major monuments of the capital is the Juche Idea Tower, and its 170-meter steeple crowned by a twenty-meter torch can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.

40 km south of the capital lies the city of Nampho, the main international port and commercial center of the country.

The Kuvolsan chain, a lonely rock massif (954 m), lies on the opposite bank of the Tedongan River, 75 km southwest of Pyongyang, and is considered the most picturesque place in the neighborhood.

Kaesong city, lying 125 kilometers south of Pyongyang, at the border with South Korea, is the capital of the first unified Korean state of Koryo.

The Myohyang Mountain Range ("fragrant mountains") lies 150 km north of the capital, at the junction of three provinces, Pyongan Pukto, Pyongan-Namdo and Chagando. This is a knot of mountain ridges, in which such low ridges as the Myohyang (the highest point is Mount Piro, or Mehansan, 1,909 m), the Chogyuren (Nannimsan, 2,186 m) and the Kannam (Pirebon, 1,470 m) meet.

The extinct volcano Pektusan ("the main white mountain"), on the Korean-Chinese border, is the highest peak of the Korean Peninsula and one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Tourism. In North Korea, the following kinds of tourism are popular: mountain ascents (Mount Pektu, Miohiang and Kumgang), traditional Taekwondo art classes, mud therapy, studying the Korean language, hunting and biological or geological expeditions to Pektusan.

Climate. North Korea is dominated by a temperate monsoon climate. During the summer months, the air warms up to +20°C. In the central parts of North Korea, the January temperature ranges from -10°C to -20°C. The climate of the coastal area is milder. In the winter, the air warms up to -1°C - +1°C. The total amount of annual rainfall in the vicinity of Pyongyang is from 600 to 1000 mm, while it reaches up to 1,700 mm on the eastern coast and up to 2,000 mm in the mountains.
