Cameroon is situated in the north-western part of Central Africa and stretches from Lake Chad in the north to the coast of the Gulf of Biafra (part of the Gulf of Guinea) in the south-west. Cameroon borders on Nigeria, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The area of Cameroon is 475,400 sq km.
Relief. The nature of Cameroon is very diverse. The surface of the country is elevated on the whole, with a predominance of heights up to 1,000 m. There are more than 70 volcanic craters, which include the active Cameroon Volcano, 4,070 m high. Surrounding the Cameroon massif, the stepped Cameroon Plateau rises above the coastal lowlands and it is divided by the Sanaga River into the southern Cameroon Plateau and the Adamawa Mountains. In the east, the plateau gradually lowers down to the Logone Valley and is divided into small ridges, while in the north its steep ledges drop to the depression of Lake Chad. There are volcanic areas in the north-west, with a maximum height of 2,740 m (Mount Bambutos).
Mountains. The Cameroon Mountains are a powerful group of volcanic mountains that extend up to the sea. This mountain range has 75 craters, which is crowned by the active Cameroon Volcano, the highest peak in Central Africa (4,070 m). Rivers. The most important river of Cameroon is the Sanaga River with its tributaries Jerome and Lom. Other rivers that flow in Cameroon include such rivers as the Nong, the Jakarta, the Bumba, the Benue, the Mbere, the Mbam, the Bimbiya, the Rio del Rei, the Mungo, the Mundame, the Dibambu, the Kvakvu, the Lokundshe, the Kribi, the Lobe and the Campo. Lakes. The lakes of Cameroon include Lake Elephant and Lake Tibati.
National parks and reserves. The national parks of Cameroon include the Vase, Bubandjida, Benue and Kousseri parks as well as the Dja and Campo reserves.
Sightseeing.
Yaounde is the capital of Cameroon and the administrative center of the Central Southern Province. Yaounde is one of the most quiet and tranquil capitals on the African continent. The city is almost entirely located along the main street, Kennedy Avenue, and the neighboring hills.
Daula is the largest and oldest city in the country, with a large number of buildings in the colonial style, the picturesque Aqua Palace Hotel, the Daula Museum and Artisinel Kameroonais, a huge open market.
Buea is the former capital of the West Cameroon German protectorate; now it serves as the best starting point for a trip to the picturesque Mount Cameroon (4,070 m), one of the major natural attractions in the country.Fumban is a city in the central part of Cameroon, one of the best recreation centers in the country and an important center of traditional arts.
Kribi is the best seaside resort with kilometres-long snow-white beaches in the Ebundja and Londji regions, numerous restaurants, bars, discos and a perfectly equipped water center particularly attractive for fishermen.
The Bafusam - Bamenda area has big deposits of volcanic salts with a unique composition containing virtually every known trace elements and in the future it may become one of the best spa resorts in Africa.
The Waza National Park, located in the far north of Cameroon, is of great interest to those who are interested in African flora and fauna.
Climate. Cameroon has a hot climate, humid equatorial in the south and dry subequatorial in the north. In the south, the average monthly temperature is 22°C-28°C. The dry season is virtually non-existent. It is slightly cooler in the inland areas along the Cameroon Plateau (an average temperature of 23°C-24°C). The country receives most of its rainfall (1500-1700 mm a year) during two wet seasons - September to November and April to June. In the north, a strong influence of the Sahara Desert is felt. The average temperature is 26°C-33°C and the amount of rainfall is less than 500 mm a year.
