Greece is situated in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula and its surrounding islands. The mainland Greece washed on three sides by the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean Seas and the southern coast of Crete is washed by the Libyan Sea. Greece borders on Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. The Greek peninsula occupies an area of 132 square km. Athens, the capital of Greece, is situated on the Attica Peninsula.

Mountains. The holy mountain of Athos is a peninsula in north-eastern Greece. It is a mountainous peninsula covered with dense forest and pitted by a large number of rocky ravines. In the south-eastern part of the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos rises to a height of 2033 m.

Parnassus is a mountain chain, which starts from Eta and extends up to the Gulf of Corinth, called Kirphis (now Sumalies). Its highest peak is Parnassus of Delphi, with the Tiphoreia and Likoreia peaks (now Liokura, 2,459 m).

Okhi is a mountain on the Euboea Island in the south of Greece, 30 km east of the town of Halkida. The maximum height of the mountain is 1,372 m.

Pelion is a mountain in the south-east of Thessaly, between Lake Bebei, the Bay of Pagasae and the Aegean Sea.

Pindou (Pindos) is a mountain range in the west of the Balkan Peninsula, in northern Greece and Albania. It is located between Thessaly and Epirus, to the south-west of the Bora-Dag Range.

Olympus is the highest mountain massif of Greece, reaching 2,917 m in height.

Rivers. The rivers that run through Greece include the Arahtos, the Aheloos, the Aliakmon, the Pinos, the Sperhios, the Alfios, the Eurotas, the Aksos (Vardar), the Strymon (Struma), the Ebros and the Nestos (Mesta). The Aliakmon is the longest river in Greece (300 km).

Lakes. In Greece, there are over 20 lakes covering an area of 10-100 sq km. The biggest and deepest of these have a tectonic origin. They include Lakes Trihonis (95.5 sq km), Volvi (75.6 sq km), Vegoritis (72.5 sq km), Prespa, Orestiada (Kastor) and Doiran.

Caves. Caves Diru is located in Laconia (the southern part of the Peloponnesus), on the Mani Peninsula. It has three caves - Diru, Alepotripa (Fox Hole) and Glifada. Other caves in Greece include Cave Matala and Cave Zeus.

National parks.

In Greece, the most important national parks include the Olympus National Park, the Prespa Park and the Samaria Park.

Places of interest in Greece also include the Dragon Lake, the Gamila and Smolikas peaks and the Vikos Canyon.

Sightseeing. Athens is the capital of Greece, the main tourist destination and one of the oldest cities in the world. The hills Acropolis and Likabet (Likavitos) are considered the heart of Athens. The Parthenon is the pearl of the Acropolis (5th cent. BC).

The Peloponnesus, a mountainous peninsula lying in southern Greece, is the birthplace of many ancient myths as well as a modern recreation area.

Olympia is located in the north-west of the Peloponnesus, where in the ancient times the Olympic Games were held in honor of Zeus.

Macedonia is the largest and fertile region of Greece, which is known for its beautiful waterfalls and archaeological sites, such as Olintos, Dion, Vergina, Pella, Tasos and Platamon.

Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia and the second largest city in the country, the recognized symbol of which is Lefkos-Pyrgos (White Tower), a former Turkish prison.

The island of Crete, where Zeus was born, is the place where the Palace of Minos and the famous Labyrinth of Minotaur are situated.

Santorini is the only volcanic island in Europe, which has given rise to a number of legends of Atlantis.

Rhodes is a large fertile island off the south-western coast of Asia Minor. It is famous for the statue of Colossus found on the island, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, as well as three thousand other statues scattered around the island.

Mycenae is a town and a castle in the north of the Peloponnesus.

Meteora is a group of unique medieval monasteries.

Tourism. In Greece, the following types of tourism are most popular:

cycling tourism on Mount Parnassus, in Varibobi, Pendeli and Dionysus;
ski tourism in resorts such as Pigadia, Falakro, Seli, Parnassus, Menalon, Vasilitsa, Karpenisi, Kaimaktsalan, Elatohori and Kalavrit;
climbing in the alpine resorts Zilnya and Stefani;
diving near the islands of the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea.

Tourists also visit such towns as Kaimaktsalan, Elatohori, Karpenisi, Prespes, Zagorohoria, Kastoria and Arahova. The most popular resorts in Greece are Kastoria, the island of Corfu, the island of Crete and the island of Rhodes.

Climate. Greece lies within the Mediterranean climatic zone. Summers in Greece have practically no rain, while winters often see downpours with winds. In winter, the average temperature is 5-10°C. February is the coldest month. Snow falls are very rare in winter and snow lasts no more than 3 days. However the tops of the mountains are almost always covered with snow.
