Hungary is a state in Central Europe. Hungary borders with Slovakia in the north, with Ukraine in the northeast, with Romania in the east, with Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia in the south, with Austria in the west. The total area of Hungary is 93,000 sq km.
Relief. The territory of Hungary is predominantly flat. The major part of it is located on the Hungarian Plain. The western part of the Plain (Dunantul) is dissected by numerous hills up to 300 m high. The relief of the eastern part (Alföld) is flat and low. The northwest of the country is occupied by the Kishalfeld Depression limited in the west by the foothills of the Alps 500-800 m high (Írott-kö, 883 m). The Transdanubian Medium Mountains with plateau-like massifs 400-700 m high (the Bakony, the Vértes, the Dunazug) stretch to the north of Lake Balaton. The southern part of Dunantul is occupied by the block mountains of Mecsek up to 681 m high (Zengö Mountain).
Mountains. The Bakony Mountains are a massif in Central Transdanubia in Hungary. The Bakony Mountains are situated to the north of Lake Balaton. The mountains range is interrupted, it stretches from the southwest to the northeast.the range is 80 km long and about 40 km wide. It is subdivided into the Northern Bakony and the Southern Bakony.
The Börzsöny are a massif of mostly volcanic origin near the Danube Bend (Szentendre) in Hungary. In its eastern part the Börzsöny Natural Park is situated.
The following mountains are the highest ones: Csóványos (938 m), Nagy-Hideghegy (865 m), Magosfa (916 m), Nagy-Inóc (813 m).
Rivers. All the rivers in Hungary pertain to the Danube basin. The Danube itself runs 410 km across the country from the north to the south.
Other rivers of Hungary are the Zagyva, the Körös, the Hornád, the Gortva, the Drava, the Zala, the Ipoly, the Mura, the Maros, the Rába, the Ronyva, the Sajó, the Ticza.
Lakes. The largest lake in Hungary – Lake Balaton – is an important international tourist centre.
Sightseeing. Budapest – the capital of the country – in among the world most beautiful cities. The panorama of the central part of the city (former Buda) with the view of the Danube is included by the UNESCO in the World Heritage List.
The city of Székesfehérvár built on the place of an ancient Roman colony “Alba Regia” is famous for its antique museum “Ruins of Gorzium” and the XVIII century cathedral on the foundation of an XI century church.
At the foothills of the Visegrádi Mountains two ancient royal residences are situated: Visegrád with the summer residence of the Hungarian kings, and Esztergom which is the centre of the Hungarian Catholic church.
Tihany is a modern tourist centre. The twin-tower church rising over the country from a distance attracts the tourists` attention to the peninsula, the territory of which is declared preserved area.
Balatonfüred is an old health resort, the world-known cardiological sanatorium where natural carbonaceous mineral springs rise to the surface from under the earth.
Keszthely – the oldest of the cities on the shore of Lake Balaton – is situated at the western tip of the lake. Alongside with comfortable and well-attended beaches, Kezsthely offers to the visitors meeting old cosy streets and the baroque-style palace of the Festetics family, situated in a beautiful park.
Badacsony is also a well-known wine region where some of the best wine vaults in the country are situated.
Szantod is located right facing the Tihany Peninsula. Long before motor boats appeared on the lake, it was the major crossing on Lake Balaton.
Veszprém is one of the oldest and the most beautiful cities of the country. It is the “queens` city”, founded by the first king of Hungary Ishtvan I “the Saint” more than 1,000 years ago. The city stretches on the hills, the highest of which is the Fortress Mountain that is the base for wonderful palaces and temples of the city.
Hévíz is the Europe largest warm lake, the salubrious water of which is rich in mineral salts.
Tourism. The resort region of Lake Balaton, more than 150 mineral springs, the warm Lake Heviz, the spas of Budapest, Balatonföldvár, Balatonfüred, Hévíz, Debrecen, Hajdúböszö, and Sárvár have made Hungary famous as one of the best resort places in Europe.
Mountains in Hungary are not too high, though there are several ski resorts, such as Matra, Bük, Magas Hill.
Climate. The climate of Hungary is continental with mild winter and hot summer. The average temperatures in January are 0°C to -4°C, those in July from +20°C to +22°C. The annual precipitation is from 450 mm in the east to 900 mm in the mountains.
