The state of Israel is situated in the Middle East, on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Israel is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the west, the Syrian-African Rift Valley in the east and the Red Sea in the south. The country borders with Lebanon in the north (a borderline of 102 km), Syria in the north-east (80 km), Jordan in the east (480 km) and Egypt in the south-west (220 km). The total length of the borderline is 1,123 km. The area of Israel is 21,900 sq km, including the territory of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. Israel is washed by three seas - the Mediterranean, the Red and the Dead Sea.

Mountains. The Judean Mountains is a mountain chain in the east of Israel, just west off Jerusalem, up to the Judean Desert, which descends to the Dead Sea.

The Gilboa Mountains is a mountain range in the Jezreel Valley in Israel. The ridge extends from east to west and is located to the west of the Jordan River.

A mountain ridge 17 km long and 550 m high above sea level is the utmost north-eastern part of Samaria and the southern boundary of the Jezreel Valley. It was here that the borders of three tribes of Israel, Issachar, Zebulun and Menashe, came together.

Calvary is the historic hill on the outskirts of Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was crucified.

The Karmel is a big mountain range, by Israeli standards, located in the north-west of Israel. From the west this range is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, while in the north it is adjoined by the Haifa Bay and the Zebulun Valley. In the south and east, the range descends gradually, turning into hills near the town of Benjamin in the south and Yokneam in the east.

Megiddo is a hill on the territory of Israel, in the foothills of the Karmel, near the modern settlement bearing the same name, and it is a well-known site of archaeological excavations. In ancient times it was an important city because of its strategic position.

Tabor is a mountain, 588 meters high, located in the Lower Galilee, 9 km south-east of Nazareth, in Israel.

Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) is the highest mountain in Israel. The Hermon mountain range is about 60 km long and it is located at the cross-point of the border between Lebanon, Israel and Syria. Its peak lies at an altitude of 2,814 m above sea level on the border with Syria and Lebanon. The highest peak in Israel is 2,236 m above sea level.

Rivers and Lakes. In the north-east lie the upper reaches of Israel's largest river, the Jordan, which begins on Mount Hermon. It has its origin in the Ghor Valley, falls into Lake Kinneret, comes out of it and then flows through the Jordan Valley.

Other rivers in Israel include the Alexander, the Banias, the Kishon, the Lachish, the Sorek, the Taninim, the Harod and the Yarkon.

The only fresh water reservoir in Israel is Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Tiberias or Gennesaret, the Sea of Galilee). It is located in the Jordan Valley, which runs from the north along the border with Jordan to the Arava Desert, south of the Dead Sea.

National Parks and Reserves. In Israel, there are dozens of large and small protected natural parks. The best known of them include reserves in Galilee (Achzib, Mount Meron, Nahal Ayun, Mount Karmel, Mount Tavor, and many other), reserves in the Golan Heights (Yehuda, Meshushim, Hamat Gader, etc.), a number of nature reserves in the south of the country, between Be'er Shevoy and Eilat and near the coast of the Dead Sea (En-Geddi, Sodom and Mitzpe Shalem).

Sightseeing. Bethlehem is the most revered Christian city in which, according to the New Testament, Jesus Christ was born. The city is situated on a high hill.

The Dead Sea is the deepest depression in the world, located 400 meters below the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated in the lowest part of the El-Ghor (Ghor) tectonic basin, 400 meters below sea level.

The Beit Netufa Valley, particularly the western part of this valley, is used as a huge water reservoir in the water system.

Nazareth (the Hebrew Notsrat or Natsrat and the Arabic al-Nasser) is located in the center of the Lower Galilee. It is the largest Arab city in Israel and one of the holy cities of Christendom. It is believed that Jesus Christ spent his childhood in Nazareth.

The major attractions of Israel also include the Ophel Archaeological Park, the Jewish University Botanical Garden, the Jewish Quarter, the Mea Shearim (Meah She'arim) Quarter and the underground tunnels at Kotel (the Western Wall Tunnels).

Tourism.

Israel's resorts, Tiberias Hot Springs, En-Geddi, Lesa Karmel, Herods Vitalis and many other sights are well-known for their thermal springs as well as a full range of services for prevention and treatment of various diseases, a number of health improvement methods and unique psychological training techniques.

Tel Aviv, Netania, Caesarea, Herzlia, Haifa and Eilat are among the cities and resorts of Israel that offer tourists a wide choice of entertainment: from winter sports to scuba diving, windsurfing, handgliding, sailing, etc. The list of tourist attractions in Israel is simply endless, including water parks, dolphinaria, oceanaria, etc.

Climate. Israel's subtropical climate is relatively humid in the north, semi-arid and desert in the south. Summers in Israel are long and hot (the temperature in July and August in Israel is 24-28°C, in Ghor to 36°C), while winters are dry, warm and relatively mild (the January temperature stands at 6-14°C and reaches up to 18°C in the south-west of the Dead Sea). Rainfall distribution is uneven - the Dead Sea receives only 100-200 mm per year, the plateau area receives 600-800 mm, and the plain near the Mediterranean Sea has 400-800 mm of rainfall. The rainy season starts in October and ends in April.
