The set of topographic maps of Kuwait contains maps of the islands Bubiyan, Failana, maps of Warbah, maps of Minjan, Aupa, maps of Umm an Namil, maps of Esh-Shuwaih, Nubbar, maps of Naru, Umm al Maradim, and maps of Persian Gulf. Kuwait is a country situated in the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. Kuwait borders on Iraq in the north and north-west, Saudi Arabia in the south and south-west and is washed by the waters of the Persian Gulf in the east. The total area of Kuwait is 17,800 sq km. The coastal islands that belong to Kuwait include Bubiyan, Failana, Warbah, Minjan, Aupa, Umm an Namil, Esh-Shuwaih, Nubbar, Naru and Umm al Maradim.
Relief. Almost all of Kuwait's territory is covered by deserts. It is stony in the western part and sandy in the eastern part. There are dunes rising along the coast of the Persian Gulf. The coastline, about 20 km long, is cut across by tongues of sand and black lagoons. Based on types of terrain, Kuwait's territory can be divided into three parts: an elevated inland area; a hilly central area and a coastal plain.
Mountains. The elevated area spreads across the south-western part of the country. On the whole, it is the highest area within Kuwait's territory - from 200 to 300 m high. The central hilly area is quite a wide strip of land (50 km), which runs across the country from the north-west to the south-east. The height of its elevation is 100 to 200 m. The coastal area is a continuation of the El-Pasa Depression (Saudi Arabia). Basically, it is a sandy plain with elevations not higher than 100 m.
Rivers. In Kuwait, there are no rivers or lakes with a perennial drain. Springs of water are very scarce.
National Parks and Nature Reserves. There is a small bird reserve on Al-Siyarh Island. There s a nature reserve called Al-Jasra near Al-Jasra, which was created to protect and study the unique local ecocenosis.
Sightseeing. Kuwait is one of the world's most ancient areas populated by people. Archaeologists discovered a large number of ancient settlement sites dated 5000 BC. There were Sumerian, Babylonian, Persian and Greek cities here and it was a crossroads of ancient trade routes as well as a center of unique local cultures.
Al-Kuwait is the only large city in the country. An ancient fortress used as shelter for merchants and bedouins, it turned into the flourishing trade, cultural and entertainment center of the region for as short a time as half a century. The places of particular interest in Kuwait include the Kuwait National Museum, the private Tapeg-Rajab Museum, Dar Al-Atar Al-Islamia (the Museum of Islamic Art), the Sadu-House Bedouin Museum and Cultural Foundation, the Al-Halifa mosque (1714), and the gigantic Grand Mosque.
Failaka Island (an area of about 24 sq km), 20 km north-east of Al-Kuwait, was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. During the Bronze Age, there were outposts of the Dilmun civilization here.
The town of Al-Ahmadi, built in the mid-20th century in a deserted place 12 km south of El-Kuwait, was named after Sheikh Ahmad. This territory belongs to the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). As for its main sights, they include an exibition center.
The town of Al-Jasra, a real "place of war glory" for the Kuwaitans, lies 32 km west of Kuwait-City. Here the emir of Kuwait defeated the invading army of the Saudies in 1920. There are vast salt swamps near the town, where the Al-Jasra nature reserve (an area of 250 ha) was created.
Tourism.
Hijran is the largest and one of the best sea resorts in the country. Here you can find all it takes to have a good rest, while the services and the recreational conditions are just as good as in the majority of luxurious seaside resorts of the world.
Climate. The climate of Kuwait is subtropical and dry. The year is divided into two seasons - the winter season and the summer season. The average annual temperature reaches +27˚С, while the average July temperature is +30˚С; sometimes, however, it can rise to +50˚С even in the shade. Winters are warm with an average temperature of +13˚С. Kuwait receives little rainfall (100-150 mm a year), and there are droughts here every 3-5 years.
