The set of topographic maps of Latvia includes maps of the rivers Daugava, Gauja, Venta maps, Lielupe maps and maps of the lake Lubans, Raznas, Engure maps, Burnieku maps, Dridzis maps and Garais maps. Latvia is a Baltic State, which geographically belongs to Eastern and Northern Europe. Latvia is washed by the Baltic Sea in the west; it borders on Estonia in the north, Lithuania in the south, Russia and Belarus in the east. The total area of Latvia is 64,589 sq km. The total length of its borders is 1,150 km. Riga is the capital of Latvia.
Relief. Latvia has a flat terrain with slightly decayed hills. The average height is 100-200 m above the sea level; the highest peak is Mount Gaizinkalns (312 m).
Mountains. The mountains in Latvia are low.
The most important mountains include Gaizinkalns, 312 m; Lielais Liepa Kalns (Big Linden-Tree Mountain), 289 m; Delinkalns, 272 m; Krievu Kalns (Russian Mountain), 220 m and Erglu Kalns (Eagle's Mountain), 220 m.
Rivers. The largest rivers in Latvia include the Daugava, the Gauja, the Venta and the Lielupe.
The Daugava begins in Russia, in the Valdai Hills, and runs through Belarus and then Latvia (the total length of the river is 1,005 km, while the length of the river in Latvia is 352 km).
The Gauja is the longest river in Latvia (452 km). It starts in the Vidzeme Uplands at the foot of Mount Elka, not far from Lake Aluksta.
Lakes. Latvia is rich in lakes. Most of its 2,260 lakes are small, but 15 lakes have an area of over 10 sq km. The largest lakes include Lubans (80.7 sq km) Raznas (57.6 sq km) Engure (40.5 sq km) and Burnieku (40.1 sq km) The deepest lakes are Dridzis and Garais (Garzis) (56.0 sq km) in the Kraslava District.
National Parks. The Kemeri National Park was founded in 1997. The park is located in the central part of Latvia bordering on the Baltic Sea. The territory of the Kemeri Park has a total of 38,165 hectares, 57% of which is covered in forest, 24% is swamps and 10% is surface water.
There are also such reserves and national parks in Latvia as the Gauja Valley, Grini, Moritssala, Slitere, etc.
Sightseeing. Latvia is a country of ancient castles and magnificent cathedrals. It is visited by a large number of tourists from all over the world, who come here with a keen interest.
Riga, the capital of Latvia, is the main center of the country. Vekriga (“Old Riga”), a small district of Riga with dozens of old buildings, is considered to be the main attraction.
The Baltic resort of Jurmala is not less famous than the capital with its large number of spas and health resorts stretching for 32 km along the Gulf of Riga.
Ventspils lies on the coast of the Baltic Sea, 180 km from the capital. A large industrial and commercial center, the city has preserved its unique character and its clean beaches
Liepaja is the third largest city in Latvia, a special economic zone and a fast-growing commercial port.
Karosta is the northern suburb of Liepaja, a remarkable sight itself. The way to the city lies through two bridges - the first lying through the tunnel and connecting the neighbouring Lake Liepaja (Liepajas Ezers) to the Baltic Sea and the second lying through the Karosta Canal, which cuts into the mainland for several kilometers.
The most interesting sights of Kuldiga include the Stone Bridge (1874) across the Venta River, Edole Palace (the 13th century), the ruins of an ancient fortress and the Venta Rumba Waterfalls on the Venta River, the widest in Europe (275 m wide and 2 m high).
Tukums is an ancient city on the road from Riga to Ventspils. There are a number of very significant architectural and historical monuments preserved here.
The Sigulda resort is called “The Switzerland of Latvia” and one of the most visited cities in Latvia. The city is famous for its National Park, the ruins of Sigulda Castle and the ancient Turaida Castle (the 13th century).
Cesis is one of the most fascinating cities, which lies at the heart of the northern part of the Vidzeme Hills, 38 km from Sigulda.
Daugavpils, the second largest city of Latvia, lies 230 km from the capital. It is a major industrial and transport hub of the country; yet, it has retained its historic center and splendid scenery.
Tourism. Jurmala is the largest resort in the Baltic region. The center of Jurmala, Dubulti, is located 22 km from Riga.
Ventspils is the first beach in Latvia, which was awarded with the much-awaited blue flag. The Liepaja resort lies on the most southern stretch of the Baltic coast. It is known for its Seaside Park, the largest park in Latvia (over 50 hectares).
The resort town of Sigulda, in the north-eastern part of Latvia, 53 km from Riga, is one of the major winter sports centers in Latvia.
Gaizinkalns, the highest point of the country, lies in the Madona District of Latvia. There are modern skiing tracks here.
The Zhagarkalns Ski Center is located near Cesis. Tourists are offered to choose out of seven skiing tracks here, four of which are 200 m long (their elevation is 50 m), while the rest are 180-220 m long (their elevation is 45 m).
Climate. Latvia has a moderate climate - maritime near the coast and continental moderate in the east. July is the warmest month; the average daily temperature at this time of the year is +20°C near the sea coast, while it is +23°C in continental areas. January is the coldest month; the temperature rises up to -11°C in continental areas, but sometimes it falls to - 30°C. The country receives 500-800 mm of rainfall a year, mostly in late summer and autumn, when there is up to 80 mm of rainfall per month.
