Lithuania is a country situated in North-West Europe, near the Baltic Sea. The length of its coastline is 99 km. Lithuania borders on Latvia in the north, Belarus in the east and the south-east, Poland in the south and the Kaliningrad Oblast, the enclave of the Russian Federation, in the south-west. The area of the country is 65, 200 sq km.
Relief. The territory of Lithuania is dominated by a level terrain with rather flat elevations of up to 300 m. In the central part of Lithuania, the Mid-Lithuanian Lowland extends from north to south, rising to a height of 16-90 m above sea level. The narrow plain with heights of up to 50 m girds the Baltic Sea coast. The most elevated parts of the territory are the Baltic Range with heights of up to 294 m, extending from north-west to south-east along the border with Belarus, and the Zemait Hills in the west.
Rivers. The major rivers of Lithuania include such rivers as the Minia, the Vianta, the Jura, the Mituva, the Dubisa, the Muša, the Sušve, the Niaveżis, the Piviasa, the Sviantoin, the Neris, the Nemunas, the Miarkija and the Disna.
Lakes. The largest lakes include Lakes Dusia and Metelis.
National parks and reserves. The Curonian Spit National Park is located near the city of Klaipeda and is built around a unique sand spit, nearly 100 km long. The park was created in 1987 and has an area of 16 hectares.
The Dzuikij National Park is the largest park in Lithuania. It covers an area of 55 hectares. In the Dzuikij Park, there are facilities for cycling and boating tours and excellent opportunities for country tourism.
The Aukstaitija National Park is the oldest in Lithuania. It is known primarily for a large number of lakes on its territory, near the town of Ignalina. In total, the park has over 120 lakes.
The Zemaitija National Park (20 hectares) and the Plokstin Reserve near the town of Plateliai also enjoy widespread popularity.
Sightseeing. Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, the largest city of the republic, an industrial and cultural center, which stands on the Neris and Vilniale Rivers. The most important historical monument of Vilnius is the Old Town of Vilnius, one of the biggest in Europe.
Trakai is the ancient capital of Lithuania. One of the town’s sights is the Trakai National Historical and Cultural Park, with a total area of 8,200 ha. In this park, there are two nature reserves and ten cultural and natural sites and unique landscapes.
Klaipeda (formerly known as Memel) is a major seaport on the coast of the Curonian Lagoon and one of the most ancient cities in Lithuania, which was founded in 1252.
Neringa is one of the best resort areas in the country, which lies on the Curonian Spit.
Palanga is situated on the Baltic coast, in the north-western part of Lithuania, 25 km from Klaipeda. The Palanga Botanical Park is the most beautiful botanical garden in Lithuania. Palanga is also famous for its thermal and mineral baths.
Druskininkai is a small nice resort in the south of the country, 130 km from Vilnius, which is famous for its unique mineral springs and healing mud.
Tourism. In Lithuania, cycling is particularly popular. There are two international cycling Euro Velo routes here.
In Lithuania, there are some 20 navigable rivers, good for travelling. Traveling along rivers and lakes, you can visit many beautiful places in Lithuania, particularly national and regional parks. Rivers with the most splendid bends and banks and rapidly changing landscapes include the Minia, the Sventoji, the Dubisa, the Zeimiana, the Miarkis and the Ula. Moreover, you can see on their shores old-style villages and towns as well as unique folk culture and natural attractions.
To those who like to travel in lakes we would recommend going to East or South Lithuania. The largest groups of lakes are found on the territory of the Aukštait, Labanor, Grazut, Sartai and Veiseyai regional parks.
In the Kurtuvenai Regional Park, there is a year-round horse-riding center. The park also offers horse riding tours.
Competitions at Lake Sartai are one of the most cheerful winter festivals, where you can see a large number of beautiful horses. This festival is usually attended by tens of thousands of people.
Climate. Lithuania lies in the transition zone between a maritime climate and a continental climate. The average January temperature is -5°C, while the average July temperature is +17°C. The annual amount of precipitation ranges from 540 mm in the central areas to 930 mm on the south-western coast of the Zemait Hills. Three quarters of all precipitation is rain. There is often fog in spring and in autumn, while there are thaws in winter.
