Malawi is a state in the southeastern part of the African continent. Malawi borders with Mozambique in the south and the southeast, with Zambia in the west, with Tanzania in the north. The total length of the borders of Malawi is 2,881 km. The eastern border with Mozambique and Tanzania is created by Lake Nyasa.
Relief. The major part of Malawi (80%) is occupied by highland plateaus and uplands of 1,000-1,500 m high with ridges and depressions. The eastern part is Lake Malawi valley with tremendous level differences. This is one of the most seismic regions in Africa. The Mulanje Massif near the border with Mozambique is the place where the highest peak of the country Sapitwa Mountain (3,002 m) is located.
Rivers. Malawi has a dense network of rivers: Dwangwa, Lizungwe, Lilongwe, Lintipe, Lufira,Mwanza, Rivirivi, the Northern and the Southern Rukuru, Shire. In winter the majority of the rivers dry up almost completely.
Lakes. The best part of eastern border of the country is formed by Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa), the third largest lake in Africa (600 km long, 80 km wide). In its depth (up to 700 m) live about 500 species of fish.
National Parks and Reserves. Malawian National Parks – Kasungu, Lengwe, Liwonde, Nyika, and Lake Malawi – though small, are very well-attended and carefully protected.
Sightseeing. Malawi is rich in picturesque landscapes, unique natural complexes and is especially famous for its flora. Due to a wide range of habitats the nature of the country abounds with wild flowers - there are numerous species of proteas, aloes, wild gladioluses, and immortelles – especially beautiful on the slopes of the mountains.
The capital of Malawi Lilongwe is quite a commonplace city with scanty interest for tourists. The major part of the buildings are standard modern administrative edifices in the New City or in the City Centre.
Nkata Bay located 270 km to the north of Lilongwe is the most “scenic” city in the shores of Lake Nyasa (Malawi). The place is very popular as a medium-priced resort evidently designed for the Europeans and quite well developed but in spite of the inflow of tourists still preserving the Malawian originality.
Another popular among tourists area is that of the southern mountainous Mulanje region. The wonderful landscape, free way through mountainous woodlands, footworn paths and well-serviced special huts and camps make this region the best tracking area in the country.
Chizumulu and Likoma Islands are attractive for those who wish to get to know about the life of Lake Nyasa itself and of the surrounding territories.
Especially well-deserved fame belongs to Malawi due to its fish resources – Lake Malawi disposes of the greatest number of species of fish than any other inner water body in the world. Here live more than 500 species of fish and Crustacea, which makes the country one of the world leading centres of sporting fishing and piscatory tourism.
Climate. The climate of Malawi is of equatorial monsoon type with rainy summer (from November to March) and dry winter. The average temperature of the hottest month (November) is from +20°C in the mountains to +27°C on the shore of Lake Nyasa; that of the coldest month (July) is from +14°C to +19°C, respectively. At the altitudes of more than 2,000 m the temperature sometimes drops below 0°C and mountain peaks get covered with snow. Annual precipitation is from 750-1,000 mm in the valleys to 2,500 mm in the mountains.
