Mauritania is a country situated in North-West Africa. Mauritania borders on Algeria, Mali, Western Sahara and Senegal. In the west, Mauritania is washed by the Atlantic Ocean (about 700 km of coastline). Over 60% of the country is covered by the stony and sandy deserts of Western Sahara. The area is mostly flat, with heights of up to 915 m, although rock massifs are also common. The total area is 1,031 sq km.
Relief. Much of Mauritania is occupied by a low-lying desert, which turns into a semi-desert in the south. Along the low-lying sandy coastline spreads a strip of salt marshes and temporary salt lakes. Plateaus formed by sandstones, not higher than 300 m, in the inland areas of the country, extend from the northern border to the valley of the Senegal River. Eastern regions are covered by sandy and stony deserts. The south-eastern part of Mauritania is deserts.
Mountains. The mountains on the territory of Mauritania include Ayuna, Zouerate, Mujerii, the Tagant and Assab rocks.
Rivers. The main river of Mauritania is the Sagyuiet Al Hamra.
Lakes. The most important lakes of Mauritania include Lakes Alega and Rkiza.
National Parks and Reserves. Mauritania's national parks are Ban d'Argen, Diauling and the left zone of Gidimag.
Sightseeing.
- Nouakchott is one of the youngest capitals of the world - modern construction started only in 1960. Situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Nouakchott has nice beaches with a completely modern recreation infrastructure and two traditional African markets;
- Nouadhibou is a port city on the Nouadhibou peninsula in the north of the country and one of the best places in Mauritania for doing water sports and sport fishing;
- Athar ("the place of quick sands"), also known as Teyateyaneng, is a traditional artisan and handicraft center, famous for Mauritanian elaborate tapestries, hand-made fabrics and a variety of goods out of wood;
- Tishit is a "ghost town" at the heart of the desert. Out of its 5,000 inhabitants, only about 500 live in the town regularly;
- Kumbi Saleh, located near the modern town of El-Aaiun Atrus, is the legendary capital of the medieval empire of Ghana and possibly the largest city of its time - one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Africa;
- Shingetti is the most famous place in Mauritania, which is an ancient partially deserted town.
Climate. Mauritania has a tropical desert climate. Average temperatures range from +16°C to +20°C in January and can rise up to +32°C - 43°C in July and August. At the end of the summer, the country receives 300-500 mm of rainfall. As a rule, temperatures are lower along the coast than in the inland areas. For example, in Nouakchott, the temperature ranges from 13°C to 33°C, while in Athar (over 300 km away from the Atlantic coast) - 12°C to 43°C. In the interior of the country, the average annual rainfall is about 100 mm of rain.
