Niger is the biggest country in West Africa. Niger borders on Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Most of Niger lies in the Sahara Desert. The total area of the country is 1,267,000 sq km.
Relief. While most of Niger lies in Sahara, the surface is covered by high plateaus (an elevation of 200-500 m) with residual cliff massifs, such as the Jado, the Air and others, with heights reaching 2022 m (Idoukal-n-Taghes). On the whole, the terrain is dominated by plains rising to 300-500 m. All of Niger's east and west is occupied by sandy deserts covered by dunes. The northern part of Niger is formed by quite high desert stony plateaus (up to 1,153 m); there are plateaus in the south, formed by sand stones and clay loams.
Mountains. The most elevated part of the country is the Air Plateau. It also includes Mount Idoukal-n-Taghes, Niger's highest point (2,022 m).
Rivers. The rivers flowing through Niger include the Niger River, with its tributaries Sirba and Dori, and the Tafinkar River.
The Niger River is the most important river in West Africa. It is 4,160 km long, while the area of its basin is 2,092,000 sq km. This river is Africa's third longest river.
National Parks and Reserves. The ‘W’ National Park is located in the dry savannas in the extreme south-west of Niger.
Sightseeing.
Niamey is the capital of Niger. Despite the modern infrastructure, the city has retained its unique African identity and charm. Just like in all desert places, the sky over the city is very clear, while the city's special feature is myriads of stars easily discernible in the sky at night.
Zinder is Niger's former capital, which lies on an ancient trade route between Agadez and Kano in Nigeria. It is the second largest city in the country. In the times of its prosperity, Zinder was one of the richest cities of Africa.
Tahoua is the forth biggest city in Niger and the major stop on the road from Niamei to Agadez.
Tenere is a vast desert that lies to the north-east of Agadez and stretches over 700 km. Tenere is believed to have some of the most picturesque dunes in the world.
The Air Mountain Range is one of the most breath-taking natural sights in West Africa, which is famous for its black rocks and sharp peaks. Hot mineral springs in Tafadek and the green oases of Timia and Iferuan are hidden in the depth of the mountains.
Climate. Niger has a tropical climate in the north-east and a subequatorial climate in the south-east. Niger is one of the hottest and driest countries in the world. The average monthly temperature ranges from +20°C to +34°C. Sharp temperature variations during the day is the most characteristic feature of the local climate. Throughout the year, the maximum average temperature is +30°С, while in late spring, the day temperature exceeds +40°С virtually every day. The amount of rainfall never reaches 600 mm.
