Portugal is a state at the western extreme end of continental Europe, in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal occupies the western edge of the Meseta, which lowers towards the Atlantic Ocean. The country stretches from the lower course of the Minho River in the north to the estuary of the Guadiana and the Gulf of Cadiz in the south. The area of Portugal is 89,000 sq km.

Relief. The overall type of the landscape of Portugal clearly divides the country into the northern and the southern parts with the Tejo River being the border. The northern part is mountainous and deeply dissected (the provinces of Tras-os-Montes and Beira Alta); near the coast passes a comparatively narrow strip of a hilly plain. The southern part is mostly low, with wide flatlands and billowy plateaus.

Mountains. The granite ridge Serra da Estrela (up to 1,990 m) is the highest in the mountainous region and can be considered the western end of the Cordillera Central of Spain. A low ridge Serra de Cintra (up to 677 m) stretches from the place of the steep faulting slope of the Cordillera Central towards the southwest to the sea shore. The Setubal Peninsula to the south of Lisbon, which connects the estuary of the Tejo with the Serra de Arrabida, has a similar structure.

Rivers. The rivers passing through the territory of Portugal are the Guadiana, the Douro, the Aljezur, the Arade, the Ardila, the Vascao, the Cobres, the Coura, the Mira, the Mondego, the Odeleite, the Odelouca, the Odiaxere, the Oeiras, the Sado, the Seixe, the Tamega, the Tejo, and the Terges.

Lakes. The famous crater lake Caldeira das Sete Cidades is one of the most beautiful and majestic lakes on the Sao Miguel Island.

Sightseeing. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and one of the nicest cities in the world, situated on the hilly descents of the Tejo River valley near its estuary. The centre of the city is the Rossio Square with fountains made of bronze.

The city of Cintra, 30 km to the west of Lisbon, is the summer residence of the kings of Portugal (from the XIV to the XX centuries), the city of royal palaces, exotic parks, unassailable fortresses and castles.

Porto is one of the oldest cities and the former capital of the country. The botanic garden in Porto (1772) is the oldest in Portugal. It is a wonderful example of the late baroque style in topiary art with old orchard-houses and a castle-type park.

The city of Braga lies to the north of Porto. The city has been known from the II century BC. It is an important cultural and religious centre of the country and the residence of the bishop.

The city of Guimaraes is “the cradle of Portugal” (founded in 840 AD 50 km to the north of Porto) where the first king of the country Afonso Henriques I was born.

Aveiro - one of the oldest and the most beautiful cities of Portugal – is declared province of all mankind by the UNESCO.

Another place of interest is Evora, the capital of the former Avis Dynasty, one of the oldest cities of the Iberian Peninsula, known from the beginning of the I century AD.

The Azores are an archipelago of volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, about 1,300 km to the west of the coast of Portugal. The largest islands of Portugal are Sao Miguel, Pico, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Faial and Flores. On the Island of Pico the highest peak of Portugal – Ponta do Pico Alto (2,351 m) – is situated.

Tourism. Portugal is the country of numerous resorts: Madeira, Costa do Sol, Estoril, Cascais, Algarve, Faro, Portimau, Vilamoura, Albufeira, and Funchal.

Climate. The climate of Portugal is subtropical Mediterranean with marked influence of the ocean. The average temperatures in January are +5°C to +10°C, in July +20°C to +27°C. The humidity in the north of the country, especially in the mountainous region, is high, the annual precipitation here is from 1,000 to 2,000 mm and even more. Towards the south the humidity gradually decreases, the climate becomes much drier with long cloudless and hot summer. The amount of annual precipitation in the flatlands is 400 to 800 mm, in the mountains 1,000 to 2,500 mm.
