The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the largest state on the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is bounded by Jordan on the north, Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in the east and Oman and Yemen in the south. Saudi Arabia is bounded by the Persian Gulf in the north-east and the Red Sea in the west. The area of Saudi Arabia is about 2,240,000 sq km.
Relief. More than half of Saudi Arabia is covered by desert. Rub al-Hali, or the Great Sandy Desert, which occupies an area of approximately 650,000 sq km, is located in the south-east of the country. In the north lies part of the Syrian Desert, while the Al-Nafud Desert, with an area of about 57,000 sq km, lies further south. At the heart of Saudi Arabia, there is a plateau, crossed by a number of intermittent rivers. There are narrow coastal plains along the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.
Mountains. In the west, the Al-Hijazi mountain chain extends along the shores of the Red Sea. In the south-west, there are mountains reaching 3,000 m in height.
The Asir Mountains, 2,500-3,000 m in height, are also in the west. Mount Nabi al-Shuaiba is considered to be the highest peak of the mountains.
Jabal al-Shifa and Jebel Hijazi are the highest mountains of the peninsula, situated in the west, where individual peaks are higher than 2,500 m.
Mount Al-Taif (3353 m) is the highest point in Saudi Arabia.
There are also such important mountains as Rub el Hali, Nafud-Ez-Dahi, Tuvayk, Harrat-Rahat, Al-Hajar, Al-Sulb, Small Nefrud, Al-Summan, al-Bayada, Nafud-Ez-Sirri, Hirrat al-Uvayrid and El Kaam.
Rivers. Almost all of Saudi Arabia has no permanent rivers or water sources, temporary streams are formed only after extensive rains. They are especially abundant in the east, in El Has. There are many wells, such as Al-Nabk, Abu Qasr, Amghar, El Hafira, Shari, Ibi-Busayns, Al-Safa, Al-Habal, Usaybi, Dakhla, El-furans, ElKaiya, al-Kalb, Huvaymida, Umm Salila, Dzhayda, Uavydzha, Abu Dib, Haduf, Gaudi, Vacri, Bidzhran, al-Casbah, Hadi, Shahr, Hima, Huduf, Muraygan and Musaybih.
Sightseeing. Riyadh is one of the most modern capitals of the Middle East. Built on the money coming from the oil boom, Riyadh is a desert oasis of glass and concrete and home to a number of luxury hotels, vast hospital complexes and one of the largest airports in the world. The center of Riyadh is called Al-Bata; it is the oldest part of the city.
Jeddah is another major modern city and an industrial center and seaport on the shores of the Red Sea.
Mecca is a holy place for Muslims from all over the world.
Madayn Salah is a plain in the north-west, vented by winds; it is one of the most beautiful places in Saudi Arabia, with its huge stone tombs - one of the most interesting sights in the country.
Domat Al Djandal, in the north-east, is the main pearl of the kingdom. The city boasts two ancient architectural monuments - the ruins of Fort Qasr Maridi and the now active Mosque of Omar.
Tourism. Saudi Arabia is a country for extreme sports, and it has many things to boast. Desert rallies on off-road, "wadi bashing", vehicles are extremely popular all over the country. It is best to consult locals about how and where you should spend your free time. Although there are beautiful beaches in Saudi Arabia, water sports and recreation are not popular as it is difficult to enjoy your holiday if you have to be dressed from head to toe.
Mountain tourism is well developed in the mountains, such as Al-Hijazi, Jabal al-Shifa and Jebel Hijazi, Al-Taif, Rub Al Hali, Nafud-Ez-Dahi, Tuvayk, Harrat, Rahat, al-Bayada, Nafud-Ez-Sirri and Hirrat al-Uvayrid.
The Persian Gulf and the Red Sea are perfect for diving.
Climate. The climate in Saudi Arabia is extremely dry. The Arabian Peninsula is one of the few places on earth, where summer temperatures range from +35°C to +43°C and winter temperatures range from +8°C to +20°C. The average annual rainfall is only 100 mm.
