South Korea is a state in the northeastern part of Asia, in the south of the Korean Peninsula. In the north the country borders with the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea. Its coasts are washed by the Yellow Sea in the west, by the Sea of Japan in the east; in the southeast the country is separated from Japan by the Korea Straight. The total area of South Korea is 98,480 sq km.
Relief. The main feature of the relief of the country is hills and mountains. The main mountain range - the East Korean Mountains – runs along the eastern coast. The highest peak Hallasan is situated on the Jeju-do Island.
Mountains. The East Korean Mountains and their main range Taebaek are the major mountain system in the east of South Korea. The highest mountain there is 1,577 m high. The Sobaek Range is the southwestern branch of the system; Chirisan (1,915 m) is situated at its southern end. It is the highest peak on the continental part of the country.
Hallasan (1,950 m) is the highest peak in the country, located on the southern island of Jeju-do.
Rivers. The Hantan (The Han) is the major river in South Korea, 514 km long. Other rivers of the country are the Neungwoncheon, the Pungdeokcheon, the Taebaek.
National Parks and Reserves. The Seoraksan National Park is on the coast of the Sea of Japan (approximately 200 km to the east from Seoul) in the Seoraksan Mountains which make part of the Kumgangsan or the “Diamond Mountains”.
The Odaesan National Park is located to the south of Seoraksan and is famous for Woljonsa and Sanwonsa – two of the most ancient temples of the kingdom of Silla.
Other notable national parks are Hanre, Jirisan, Gyeryongsan, Woraksan, Songnisan, Gayasan, Hallyeo, Hallasan, Hwangpo reservations.
Sightseeing. Seoul is both ultramodern and attractively ancient city. Almost wiped off the face of the earth in the course of the Korean War, it was nearly completely restored after the 1950s. Rising above 12-line highways and overhead roads, the city preserves its hidden history of centuries-old temples, pagodas and gardens.
Seoraksan - the best of all national parks in Korea – is just wonderful. This area on the eastern coast with high mountain peaks, thick forests, majestic waterfalls, boulders-moving rivers, beaches and ancient temples attracts innumerable tourists.
Over 1000 years (up to the X century) Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Dynasty. 1000 years later it became an outdoor museum looking like a small provincial town.
The most picturesque place in Central Korea is Songnisan. The name means “mountains far from high life”, and the place corresponds to it.
The Ulleungdo Islands, 135 km to the east of the Korean Peninsula, are the only remnants of the extinct volcano that once stood in the Sea of Japan.
Dadohae Haesang National Park is located in the southwestern part of the Peninsula and consists of 1,700 islands. The islands of Hongdo and Sohuksangdo are the most popular among tourists.
Buyeo – the former capital of the Baekje Kingdom – is now a city in the west of the country. It is a friendly place with the typical southkorean lifestyle.
Jejudo, 90 km from the southern extreme point of Korea, is famous as the “Korean Hawaii”.
Chirisan is one of the three sacred mountains of Korea and is part of a national park.
Between the second largest city of Busan and the southern seaside city of Yeosu one can visit the Hallyeo Channel National Park.
Seoraksan is one of the most attractive sites of South Korea. Here mountain peaks rise high, streams are clear as crystal, waterfalls are fine, and evergreen forests are thick. In this place one can see antique temples and recluses` cabins.
Tourism. South Korea is the country where active holidays in the open air are widespread. Here one can visit good ski resorts, such as YongPyong on the eastern coast or the Alpine ski resort near Seoraksan National Park. The skiing season lasts from December to March.
Climate. The climate of South Korea is moderate monsoonal, subtropical in the south. The average temperature in January is from -21°C in the north to +4°C in the south, in July – from +22°C to +26°C. Annual precipitation is from 900 to 1,500 mm.
