The topographic map set of Syria has maps of Taurus, Hermon, Ansari maps, El-Sheikh maps, Maalula maps, Anti-Lebanon maps, Jazira maps, Bishr maps, Al-Zawiya maps and Ed-Druz maps. Syria is a country in West Asia. Syria shares borders with Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon. In the west, Syria is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The area of Syria is 185,400 sq km.

Relief. The territory of Syria, which stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the east through the northern part of the Syrian Desert, is roughly divided into five natural regions - the coastal lowland, the western mountain chain, the rift zone, the eastern mountain chain and the East Syrian Plateau.

Mountains. The Taurus is a mountain range in the southern part of Asia Minor. Its total length from Lake Egridir in the west to the headwaters of the Euphrates River in the east is 600 km. The maximum height is 3,090 m.

The Hermon mountain range is about 60 km long and it is located at the cross point of the borders between Lebanon, Israel and Syria.

The Ansari mountain range (al-Nusayriya) is also located on the territory of Syria. This range is about 65 km wide and 1,200 m high. Its highest point of the range is Mount Nebi Younes (1,561 m).

Mount El-Sheikh (2,814 m) is the highest mountain in Syria, which is located on the border with Lebanon, in the El-Sheikh range.

Other mountain chains on the Syrian territory include the Maalula, the Anti-Lebanon, the Jazira Plateau and such mountains as Bishr, Al-Zawiya, Ed-Druz, Abd al-Aziz.

Rivers. The Al-Asi (the Orontes) is the largest river in the west of Syria, which has its origin in the mountains of Lebanon and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Its length in Syria is 325 km.

Other rivers in Syria include the Tigris, the Al-Asi, the El-Kebir, the Yarmouk, the Sadjur, the Kuveyk, the Shmandur, the Afrin, the Barada, the Euphrates and its tributaries Belih and Khabour, and the Jago-Jago.

Lakes. The major lakes of Syria include Lakes Homs, Al-Djabbul, Mancala-al-Rahba and the El-Assad water reservoir.

Sightseeing.

Damascus is the largest city and the capital of Syria. Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world, the first settlement in this area dates back to 5,000 BC. The secret of its attractiveness for European tourists lies in its uncomparable oriental appearance. Small oriental markets, or bazaars, located around the great monuments of Islam have remained just as popular in recent years as before. Martyrs' Square is found in the center of the city, and there are a large concentration of restaurants and hotels around it.

Aleppo is the second largest city of Syria, called Halab by the locals. Aleppo has been largest trade center since the times of the Roman Empire. With its stunning covered malls, citadels, museums and caravanserais, the city is a wonderful place to spend a few days in.

Palmyra is the kind of place about which people usually say: if you have not seen it in Syria, you have not seen anything. The ruins of Palmyra are dated the 2nd century AD, although this ancient city earned its fame as early as under Assyrian rule.

Razafeh is a town located in the middle of a desert area, about 160 km north of Palmyra. This place has been inhabited since the time of the Assyrian Empire, and Roman Emperor Diocletian built a fort, which was part of the defense facilities erected to protect the country against attacks by the Sassanids in the late 3rd cent. AD. The fort was extended in the 5th and 6th centuries, and in the 7th century it was taken over by the Omayads and they rebuilt it into a summer palace. The Omayads realized their mistake in 743, when the Abbasids captured and destroyed the palace.

Hama is a quiet town located between Aleppo and Damascus, the most original of all Syrian cities. The waters of the Orontes River, which flows through the city, lends it a unique charm because its banks are full of greenery and filled with ancient structures, such as water wheels, which are about 20 meters in diameter.

The Krak des Chevaliers is a castle, not just a pile of rubble. It is a real crusader castle, which is almost 800 years old. The Krak des Chevaliers built between 1150 and 1250 defended the pass between Antakya in Turkey and Beirut in Lebanon and supported a garrison of 4000 soldiers. The castle withstood a number of attacks but was conquered by Sultan Baybar in 1271.

Tourism.

In Syria, there are fantastic opportunities for travelers who love hiking. There are no organized tourist walkways but there are a lot of picturesque places. For instance, you can take a walk in the mountains between Lebanon and Turkey or near crusader castles. Mountaineering is well-developed in the area of such mountain ranges as the Hermon, the Al-Sheikh, the Maalula, the Anti-Lebanon, the Jazira, the Bishr, the Al-Zawiya, the Anti-Lebanon, the Ed-Druz and the Abd al-Aziz.

Climate. Syria has a Mediterranean subtropical climate, with maximum precipitation in winter and spring and droughts in summer. The coastal area enjoys a maritime climate, with the average January temperature of +12°C and the August temperature of +27°C, precipitation is less than 700 mm per year. In the Ansari Mountains, the climate is cooler and precipitation reaches 1,500 mm per year. The eastern part of the country has a dry continental climate - the average temperature is +33°C in August and +5°C in January, but frosts occur almost every year.
