The Ukraine is a country situated in Eastern Europe. The Ukraine borders on Russia in the east, the north-east and the north, on Belarus in the north, on Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west and on Romania and Moldova in the south-west. In the south, the Ukraine is washed by the Black and the Azov Seas. The total area of the country is 603,700 sq km.
The largest Ukrainian cities include: Kiev, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Odessa, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Lviv, Krivoi Rog, Mariupol, Lugansk and Nikolaev. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev.
Relief. The Ukraine has quite a diverse terrain. 70% of its territory is covered with lowlands, 25% is uplands and only 5% is elevated area. Lowlands alternate with elevated areas, river valleys and gullies.
Mountains. The Crimean Mountains, located in the southern Crimea, extend in three ridges from Cape Aiya near Balaklava up to Feodosiya in the east. The Crimean Mountains are about 160 km long and about 50 km wide. The outer ridge includes hills up to 350 m high. The inner ridge reaches 750 m in height. The highest summit is Mount Roman-Kosh, 1545 m high.
The Ukrainian part of the Carpathian Mountains extends from the east to the west and consists of five main ranges: the Marmoroshskiye Alps, Chernogoriya, the Svidovetski Range, the Gorganski Range and the Borzhavski Range. The highest mountain massif of the Ukrainian Carpathians is Chernogoriya (an average height of 1,800 m). The highest peaks are Mount Goverla (2,061 m) and the neighbouring Mount Petros (2,020 m).
Rivers. On the territory of the Ukraine, there are such rivers as the Desna, the Smotrich, the Pripyat, the Stokhod, the Orel, the Dnepr, the Berda, the Lazeshina, the Chyornaya Tisha, the Danube and the Southern Bug.
Lakes. The most important lakes include Lake Synevyr, Lake Sasyk, the Shagany-Alibey-Burnas lake system and Shatskiye Lakes.
Waterfalls. Numerous tributaries of the Dniester (the Stryi, the Svecha, the Lomnitsa, the Bystrica, the Reut, the Zolotaya Lipa, the Strypa, the Seret, the Zbruch and the Smotrich) form a number of waterfalls, of which the Dzhurinsky Waterfall (16 m) is the highest. The Serebryanniye Waterfalls (6 m high), in the village of Sheshori, the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, is another important waterfall. The highest waterfall in the Ukraine is the Uchan-Su, which lies is located the Uchan-Su River in the suburbs of Yalta, on the southern slope of the Ai-Petri Range (98.5 m high). Other popular waterfalls include the Golovkinski Waterfall on the Uzen-Bash River (12 m), the Dzhur-Dzhur Waterfall on the Ulu Uzen River and the Rusilovskiye Waterfalls.
Nature Reserves. There are many nature reserves in the Ukraine, of which the best-known include: the Polesski State Reserve, the Black Sea Biospheric Reserve, the Ukrainian Steppe Reserve, the Yalta Mountainous Forest Reserve, Nova Kakhovka, the Gorgany Nature Reserve, the Crimean Natural Reserve, the Dnieper-Orelsky Reserve, Elanetskaya Steppe, the Kazantipski Reserve, the Kanevski Reserve, Medobory, Cape Martyan, the Opukski Reserve, the Rivnenski Reserve, Rastochye and the Yalta Mining and Forestry Reserve; biospheric reserves such as Askaniya Nova, the Chernomorski Reserve, the Carpathian Reserve and the Danube Reserve.
In the Ukraine, there are also such national parks as the Ichnyanski National Nature Park, the Carpathian National Park, the Svyatiye Gory National Nature Park, the Shatski National Nature Park, the Azovo-Sivashski Park, the Vyzhnitski Park, Podolskiye Tovtry, Skolivskiye Beskidy, the Uzhanski Park and Synevyr.
Sightseeing. There are many attractions in the Ukraine:
Ancient castles found in such cities and towns as Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Khotinsk, Uzhgorod, Mukachevo, Lutsk and Belgorod-Dnestrovski; Assumption Monastery in Vladimir-Volynsk, Svyatogorski Cave Monastery, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, and Klovski Palace and Mariyinski Palace in Kyiv;
The unique cretaceous rocks Baranyi Lby, the Korolevskiye Cliffs, Antonieviye Caves dated 11th -18th centuries;
The Tustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve in the Lviv region (the ruins of a rock fortress dated 9th -11th centuries). Other popular attractions include the Khersones Historical and Archaeological Reserve, the Kachanivka Historical and Cultural Center, a mound necropolis dated 9th -10th centuries in the Chernigov Oblast, the Vyshgorod Historical and Cultural Center, the Zaporizhzhia Sich Historical and Cultural Center at the Ukrainian National Reserve Khortitsa and the archaeological excavation of the ancient city of Khersones.
Many historic sights are found in ancient Ukrainian cities, such as Kiev, Lutsk, Khotin, Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Uman, Bila Tserkva, Mukachevo, Uzhgorod and Nevitskoye.
Tourism. In the Ukraine, the following types of tourism are most common:
Hiking tourism in the Crimea – the Baydarskoe ring, Cave MAN, Demerdzhi, Sotera, West Crimean Cave Cities, Chatyrdag, the Chernorechenski Canyon, the Khaphal Ravine, the Uzundzha Canyon, the Chatyr-Dag Plato, Balaklava, Inzhir, Cape Aiya and Kush-Kai;
Cycling tourism in the Crimea and the Carpathians and near Kyiv;
Downhill skiing at ski resorts, such as Slavskoye, Bukovel, Volovets, Podobovets, Vorokhta, Yablunitsa, Krasiya, Tysovets, Sinyak and Dragobrat;
Rafting on rivers, such as the Dniester, the Southern Bug, the Chyorny Cheremosh, the Desna, Teterev, the Cheremosh, the Tisa, the Seversky Donets, the Prut, the Sluch and the Ros;
Horse tours to the Crimea and the Carpathians.
Climate. Most of the Ukraine’s territory has a moderate continental climate, Mediterranean, with distinct seasons, and only on the southern coast of the Crimea it changes to a subtropical climate. The average temperature in January in the Ukraine ranges from -5°C to -7°C. Ukrainian summers are warm, with an average July temperature of +19°C. Precipitation spreads very unevenly across the country. Mountainous areas receive the largest amount of rainfall.
