Zambia is a state in Central Africa. Zambia borders with Angola in the west, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the west and the north, with Tanzania in the northeast, Malawi in the east and with Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia in the south. The total area of the country is 752,600,000 sq km.
Relief. The best part of the territory of Zambia is occupied by the tableland 1,000-1,500 m high. Four fifths of the territory is located in the Zambezi River basin (the name of the country originates from the name of the river). One of the world largest waterfalls – Victoria Falls (120 m) – is situated in the lower course of the river. Large tectonic lakes Tanganyika, Bangweulu and Mweru, included into the list of the seven largest lakes of Africa, are located in the north of the country. Swamps are a typical feature of the landscape.
Rivers and Lakes. The greater part of the territory of Zambia lies in the estuary of the Zambezi River and its tributaries the Kafue and the Luangwa, the smaller one – in the estuary of the Luapula. Large lakes of tectonic origin – Tanganyika, Mweru, Mweru Wantipa – are situated in the north of the country. In the southern part the storage lake Kariba is created on the Zambezi River.
National Parks and Reserves. The country has about 20 national parks: Kafue, Sioma Ngwezi, Northern Luangwa, Southern Luangwa, etc.
Sightseeing. The main place of attraction of Zambia is the famous Victoria Falls 120 m high and almost 2 km long, located in the border area of the country on the Zambezi River near the city of Livingstone. Knife Edge Point is one of the best places for the observation of Victoria Falls.
Downstream the Zambezi 300 km from Victoria Falls the picturesque Ngonye Falls are situated.
The capital of the country – the city of Lusaka – did not even exist before the beginning of the XX century. Before 1930 it was a small agricultural village that became the capital in 1931. The centre of the city is situated in its western part, the administration is located somewhat eastward. On the whole, the city is not too rich in architectural and historical monuments.
Tourism. Siawonga (100 km to the south of Lusaka) is the closest to the capital aquatic resort located in the northeast end of Kariba Lake. 40 km to the north the Chirundu Petrified Forest is located where one can see numerous marks of 150 mln year old trees and Stone Age items.
Climate. The climate of Zambia is subequatorial with three clearly marked seasons: warm and rainy from November to April, fresh and dry from May to July, hot and dry from August to October. The temperatures vary from +15°C in July to +27°C in October; the daily difference is minor. The annual amount of precipitation is 1,500 mm in the north and 700 mm in the south.
