Africa is the continent that lies to the south from the Mediterranean and the Red Seas, to the east from the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west from the Indian Ocean. The African continent covers 30,065,000 sq km, or 20.3 % of the total land area. Africa’s population is 933 million people.
Relief. The African landscape is predominantly flat. There are some elevations in the north-west of Africa, the Atlas Mountains extend here, and in Sahara there are the Ahaggar Mountains in and the Tibesti range; in the east, there are the Ethiopian Highlands; to the south of these mountains, the highest point on the continent, Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), is situated. In southern Africa, the Great Escarpment and the Drakensberg Mountains are the most pronounced ranges.
Inland waters. The world’s longest river, the Nile (6,695 km), stretches through Africa, flowing from the south northward. Its tributaries are the White Nile, the Blue Nile and the Atbara. In western Africa, there are such rivers as the Niger, the Senegal and the Volta; in central Africa, the largest rivers are the Congo, the Lualaba, the Ubangi and the Kasai; southern Africa has the Zambezi, the Limpopo, the Okavango and the Orange. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. Other major lakes include Lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika, Lakes Chad, Tana, Mobutu-Sese-Seko, Mweru and Rukwa. In addition, Africa has several water reservoirs, such as Lakes Nasser and Kariba (the Zambezi River, which has famous Victoria Falls, flows into it).
Oceans, seas, gulfs and straits. Africa is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean as well as the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The shores of Africa have several large gulfs, including the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Guinea and the Gulf of Sidra. The major straits include the Mozambique Channel.
Islands. Africa’s adjacent islands include the Canary Islands, the Comoros Islands, Seychelles, Saint Helena, the Scattered Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, Madagascar, the Mascarene Islands and Mauritius.
Deserts. In northern Africa lies the Sahara, the world’s largest desert (9,065,000 sq km), and in southern Africa, there are the Namib and the Kalahari Deserts.
Climate. Central Africa lies within the equatorial belt. To the north and the south of the equator lie respectively the northern and southern tropical zones. They are characterized by high temperatures with a small amount of rainfall, which leads to the formation of deserts.
