Morocco is a country situated in the western part of North Africa. It is bounded by Algeria in the east and south-east and by Western Sahara in the south. It is washed by the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. There are two Spanish territories on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla. The area of Morocco is 447,000 sq km.
Relief. Morocco’s landscape geography is quite varied - from plains near the Atlantic Ocean to mountains and deserts in the interior of the country. On the territory of Morocco, there are as many as four distinct mountain ranges, in addition to river valleys, sandy coasts and deserts. Three largest mountain ranges, which extend from south-west to north-east, are known as the Middle Atlas Mountains, the High Atlas Mountains and the Antiatlas Mountains. Jebel Toukbal is the highest peak of the country, 4,165 m high.
Mountains. In Morocco, there are mostly medium-high and high mountains, plains and elevated plateaus. From south-west to north-east stretches the Atlas Mountain System - the High Atlas (up to 4165 m high), the Middle Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. In the north, the Al-Reef Mountains extend along the Mediterranean coast. Other mountain ranges include the Moroccan Meseta Plateau in the north-west of the country and the Algerian-Moroccan Meseta Plateau in the north-east (1,100-1,200 m high). The territory of Morocco is marked by great seismicity.
Rivers. In Morocco, few rivers have a permanent watercourse. The largest rivers include the Mulu (520 km), the Cebu (458 km), the Umm al-Rbiya (556 km), the Tensift (270 km), which start in the highland regions of the Middle and High Atlas and flow into the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea. Other rivers include the Dra and the al-Daura.
National Parks and Reserves. The largest national parks are the Tubkal Park (in the remote areas of the High Atlas) and the Tazzeka Park (in the north-eastern part of the Middle Atlas).
Sightseeing.
Rabat, the political center of Morocco, is simply filled with Oriental traditions and culture.
Rabat is a cultural and religious center of Morocco, divided into two areas – Medina, the northern part, and the New Town, the southern part.
Casablanca, the main economic center of Morocco, bears no resemblance to a traditional Oriental city. Casablanca is the second largest city in Africa after Cairo and it looks more like a European tourist center at the Mediterranean Sea.
Marrakech is a major cultural, religious, commercial and tourist center of the country, very popular mostly owing to its genuine Muslim atmosphere.
Fez is the religious and cultural center of Morocco. The Fez al-Bali and Fez al-Jadid tents cloak travellers in a traditional Oriental mystery.
The city of Tangier is a popular tourist center of Morocco. Its highly developed hotel infrastructure, clean and well-equipped sandy beaches, good climate, nice landscapes and beautiful architecture make a vacation in Tangier unforgettable.
Todra Gorge is one of the most interesting natural attractions in Morocco. The valley reaches 300 m in height and its minimal width is 10 m.
The resort of Essaouira, which lies in the vast Atlantic Ocean, has not yet traded its identity for the European standards of comfort and service.
Agadir is the most popular ocean resort of Morocco, situated at the foot of Anti-Atlas Mountains, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Asilah, smaller and more refined than Agadir, is a resort on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, is ideal for tourism.
Tourism. Morocco is a perfect place to start from while traveling in Africa because here it is very easy to get to from Europe. Open-air markets, scattered throughout the country, offer a variety of souvenirs, from hand-made rugs to wooden products to precious metals. Leather is the main product of the country.
In Morocco, the following tourist zones are differentiated – the Mediterranean tourist area with seaside resorts (Tangier, Tetuan, Al Hoceima, etc.); the city of Agadir with the adjacent territory, an important center of seaside tourism; a string of resorts on the Atlantic coast in the cities of Temary and Mohammed; and the area adjacent to the Sahara Desert, near the Atlas Mountains.
In Morocco, there are excellent opportunities for walking tours and hiking, particularly at Jebel Toubkal in the High Atlas. There are long routes, such as a picturesque route between Taheddirt and Imlil, part of which passes through a long line of mountain snow. There are great places for skiing. Oukaimeden, 70 km from Marrakech, is a major ski resort. At the foothills of the High Atlas, there are facilities for river rafting and fishing. Winds blowing along the coast near Essaouira are perfect for surfing and windsurfing.
Climate. Morocco has a Mediterranean climate with typical dry summers and wet winters. The temperature in summer reaches 30°C-35°C, while in winter it drops to -15°C-20°C. The north-western part of the country is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The climate here is milder. In the south-east, there is a large influence of the Sahara desert. The amount of rainfall reaches about 1,000 mm and more in the north and in the mountainous area, up to 200 mm in the south and less than 100 mm in the areas near the Sahara Desert.
