Iran is situated in South-West Asia, at the crossroads of the Middle East. Iran borders on the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south. Iran shares borders with seven countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. It also shares the waters of the Caspian Sea with Russia and Kazakhstan, the Persian Gulf with such countries as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE and the Gulf of Oman with Oman. The area of Iran is 1,648,000 sq km.
Relief. Most of Iran's territory is covered by mountains. It has the Elbrus Range (Demavend Volcano, 5604 m) in the north and the Zagros mountain system in the south-west.
Mountains. Demavend is an extinct strata volcano in the Elbrus Range, situated on the territory of the Mazandaran province, the highest point of the country (5,610 m above the sea level).
Tochal is a mountain in the Elbrus in northern Iran. It is 3964 m high. The ridge of this mountain stretches for 12 km from the north-west to the south-east. On the southern slope of Tochal, the most northern parts of Tehran are located: Shemiran, Derbend and Tejrish. Along the main ridge, there are a few peaks: Shah Neshin (3,875 m), Bazarak (3,753 m), Sar-Bazarak (3,640 m), West Lezon (3,585 m) and Lavarak (3,560 m).
There are also other mountains here, such as Alam-kuh (4,850 m), Sabalan (4,811 m), Dena (4,450 m), Zard-kuh (4,250 m), Shir-kuh (4,050 m), Taftan (4,025 m) Nezva (3,810 m) and Sahand (3,700 m).
Rivers. In Iran, there are no large rivers and there is only one navigable river, the Karun. The Karun starts in the Zagros (Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari) and runs mainly through the territory of Khuzestan in the south-west of the country. The total length of the river is 950 km. Other rivers flowing through Iran include the Karhe, the Dez, the Zayande, the Madarsu, the Sefidrud, the Mehran, the Minab, the Gabrik, the Mazan, the Kaji, the Shurab, the Manz, the Sorhab, the Atrek, the Gorgan, the Taverud, the Kyzyluzen, the Dzhagatu, the Karanku, the Karasu, the Herd and the Korzan.
Lakes. Lake Urmia is the largest perennial salt lake in the north-west of Iran. Iran’s lakes also include such important lakes as Bahtagan, Gavhuni, Neyriz, Parishan, Hamun, Neor, Save, Teshk, Meharlu, Deryangeye-Nemek and Dzhazmurian.
Sightseeing.
Tehran is one of the largest cities in Asia in terms of its area, the administrative, economic, industrial and cultural center of Iran. The main attraction of the capital is a great diversity of museums, all of which are very well maintained and have fantastic collections.
Isfahan is a museum-like city situated on a plateau on the eastern slopes of the Zagros mountain range. There are quite a lot of sights in Isfahan.
Shiraz was one of the most important cities in the medieval Islamic world and capital of the country under the Zand dynasty (16th-18th cent.).
Persepol is the capital of the Persian Empire and the ceremonial Achaemenid capital; it was once one of the most beautiful cities in the East.
Kerman is the capital of Iran’s carpet-making and one of the most attractive cities in the country.
Hamedan is one of the oldest cities in the world, the ancient capital of the Medes kingdom and the first capital of ancient Persia, one of the major centers of early civilization and the birthplace of many Persian dynasties.
Kish is the largest seaside resort in the country (with a total area of about 91 sq km), located at the Strait of Ormuz, 17 km from the coast of Iran. Kish has a well developed network of hotels and it even has its own international airport. It is one of the most rapidly developing resorts in Asia.
Tourism.
- Diving tourism in the Alborts Mountains and along the coast of the Caspian Sea;
- Climbing in Cave Hole-Zard;
- Fishing on the shores of the Caspian Sea;
- Water skiing in the Karaj Dam;
- Alpine tourism at Shemshak;
- Ski tourism in the Kalardasht and Mazandaran regions;
- Paragliding on the rocks near the village of Laridzhan;
- Beach tourism at such resorts as Golshan, Golestan, Golzar and Abshar.
Climate. Iran enjoys a subtropical dry climate. The average temperature stands at +2°C in January and +29°C in July. Precipitation in most parts of Iran is about 500 mm, while it can reach up 2000 mm per year on the northern slopes of the Elbrus Range and the South Caspian lowlands.
