Laos is a landlocked country in South-East Asia with Vientiane as its capital. Laos borders on Thailand in the west, Vietnam in the east, Cambodia in the south, the Yunnan Province of China in the north and Myanmar (Burma) in the north-west. The total area of Laos is 236,800 sq km.
Relief. Laos is a predominantly mountainous country, over 70% of its territory is occupied by mountain ranges and plateaus. Mountains rarely reach over 2,000 m in height, but they are heavily dissected. The northern part of the country is covered by the highest and least accessible underpopulated mountainous areas. The highest peak is Mount Fu-Bia (2,819 m), situated in the middle of the northern part of Laos.
Mountains. There are such mountain ranges as the Den Din, the Sham Shao, the Shusungtiatiay in the north-east of the country and the Chyong Son Mountains (up to 2,700 m high) in the south-east and the Luang Phabang Range in the west. The central part of Laos is covered by the Siang Khuang Plateau, about 1200 m in height, flanked by higher mountains. South of it rises the highest mountain in the country, Bia (2,819 m). The largest basalt plateau, the Boloven Plateau, reaches an average height of up to 1,200 m and is situated in the extreme south of the country.
Rivers. The Mekong River flows along the border between Laos and such countries as Thailand and Burma, while the Vietnamese border is demarkated by the Annamite Chain. The length of the river on the Laotian territory is 1,850 km. Most of other rivers belong to the Mekong basin. The largest of them include the Tha, the U, the Lik, the Ngum, the Bang Xiang, the Don, the Kong and the Then.
National Parks and Nature Reserves. There are 17 preserves and nature reserves scattered all over the country. The most important include such forest reserves as Nam Ta, Dong Sieng Thong, Dong Hysau and others.
Sightseeing. The city of Vientiene is the smallest capital city in south-eastern Asia (it occupies an area of about 180 sq km), the largest cultural, trade and administrative center of Laos. Laos's most important national monument, the Pha Luang Stupa (or That Luang - Pha Dzhedi Lokayulamani, 1566) is located here.
The Sienghuan Park is 25 km from the capital. This fanciful creation of Luang Pu, a jogi visionary, includes a number of Hindu and Buddhist statues, from Shiva to Vishnu to Buddah the prophet himself. The Pak caves are located 25 km from the city of Luangphabang, on the bank of the Mekong River. Two caves, Tham Ting, or Tham Leusi (The Lower Cave) and Tham Theung, or Tham Prakachai (The Upper Cave), are of the greatest interest here, which are literally filled with images of Buddah in all styles and sizes.
The Bolaven Plateau is a fertile area, where the local people from the Laven tribe grow here the world's finest type of coffee. There are also different kinds of fruit, cardamon and rattan palms here.
The town of Savannakhet, or simply Savan, is the most visited provincial town of southern Laos.
The Dzha Valley is a wild area between Phongsavan and Sieng Huang. There is a large concentration of a dozen of hundreds of stone urns in this plain, which have an unknown origin and purpose.
Climate. Laos has a subequatorial monsoon climate. The average temperature of December to January ranges from 14°C to 23°C, while the July temperature has an average of 28°C to 30°C. The amount of precipitation various significantly, from about 3,000 mm a year in the mountains to 1,300–1,700 mm in the plains.
