Luxembourg is a state in Western Europe. Luxembourg borders with Belgium, Germany and France. Together with Belgium and the Netherlands creates the Benelux. The total area of Luxembourg is 2,600,000 sq km.

Relief. Gutland - the southern part of Luxembourg – is the continuation of the Lorraine Plateau and is characterized by wavelike cuesta relief with a marked system of ridges and terraces, gradually lowering towards the east. Cultivated landscapes prevail. In Oesling - the northern part of the country, lying at the foothills of the Ardennes – the relief is deeply dissected, with the altitudes about 400-500 m. The highest peak of Luxembourg is Burgplatz (559 m).

Rivers. The major river of Luxembourg is the Sure (the Sauer), which originates in Belgium and flows eastwards, then after the confluence with the Our River takes to the southeast and to the south and finally disembogues into the Moselle. The Alzette – the southern affluent of the Sure – flows through the capital city of the Luxembourg.

National Parks. Deutsch-Luxemburgischer Naturpark is situated in the north of Luxembourg, in the Ardennes. It is a wildlife preservation, partly located in Germany.

Sightseeing. Luxembourg is the capital of the country. In Old German the word “Luxembourg” is rendered as “a small castle”. The city is divided into the Old City and the New City. At the very centre of the Old City is the Square of the Constitution, from where one can go to the chapel of St. Quirin, the gothic-style St. Michael Cathedral, the church of St. John on the Stone, the Bastion of St. Spirit, the Grand Ducal Palace, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Parts of the city of Luxembourg are connected by numerous viaducts (pipe bridges), more than 100 in number.

The city of Echternach is situated by the lower reaches of the Our River in the so-called “Little Switzerland” in the east of the country. It is one of the oldest cities of Luxembourg. Here one should visit the Basilica of St. Willibrord.

Clervaux is the largest northern city of Luxembourg, where all the buildings are constructed in Gothic style.

Another city in the north of the country worth seeing is Wiltz. The city is divided into the Lower City and the Upper City. The Lower City stands on the banks of the Wiltz River. The Upper City is situated 80 km upstream around an ancient castle.

Esch-sur-Sure is situated 10 km from Wiltz. It is an old centre of cloth manufacture. Esch-sur-Sure is the starting point of the majority of foot routes in the branches of the Ardennes and in the Deutsch-Luxemburgischer Naturpark.

Vianden - the city 18 km from Esch-sur-Sure – is famous for Victor Hugo having lived there.

In the very south of the country a small city of Schengen is situated. The city has become world-known after the Schengen Agreement was signed there in 1985.

Climate. The climate of Luxembourg is temperate, transitional from maritime to continental, mild and regular. The average temperature of January is about 0°C, that of July +17°C. The amount of precipitation exceeds 700 mm annually, mostly in winter.
