Norway is a state in the north of Europe, in the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Norway borders with Russia, Finland, and Sweden in the northeast, with Sweden in the east. The northern coasts of Norway are washed by the Arctic Ocean (the Barents Sea); in the south the strait of Skagerrak separates Norway from Denmark; the western coasts of Norway are washed by the North Sea. Norway possesses the archipelago of Svalbard (Spitsbergen, including Medvezhiy Island), Jan Mayen Island, and more than 50,000 small islands. The total are of Norway is 385,100,000 sq km (including 62,000 sq km of islands).
Mountains. Norway occupies the western mountainous part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Only some peaks to the north of the Norway-Finland border rise higher than 1,200 m, but southward the altitudes of the mountains gradually rise reaching the maximum of 2,469 m (Mount Galdhøpiggen) and 2,452 (Glittertind) in the Yutunheymen Massif. Other elevated parts of the highland are only a little lower: Dovrefjell, Ronnane, Hardangervidda, and Finnmarksvidda.
Fjords. Fjords are the main sightseeing attraction of Norway. All the coastline of the country is indented with these narrow and deep creeks, the most popular of which are Lysefjord, Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, Stavangerfjord, Skjoldafjord, Glomfjord, and Geirangerfjord.
Rivers and Lakes. The river network of Norway is very dense, mountain rivers (major – the Glomma, the Logen, the Tava, the Alta) are high-water. The country has 200,000 lakes (the largest – Lake Mjosa, 369 sq km), the total area of which is almost 5% of the territory of the country.
National Parks. Norway has 18 state reserves and 86 protected areas: Børgrefjell, Jotunheimen with 60 glaciers and the highest peaks in the country, South Spitsbergen, Northwest Spitsbergen, Northeast Svalbard.
Sightseeing. Oslo is the industrial, commercial and port centre of Norway, and at the same time one of the smallest and cleanest capital of Europe. Located on the coast of a huge homonymous fjord created by the three “sleeves” of an ancient tunnel valley, the city is picturesque by itself.
In the neighbourhood of the capital such famous sites are located as the skiing centre in Holmenkollen, summer resort Drobak with Oskraborg fortress, the impressive Fredriksten Festning fortress (1661) in Halden, Risør - one of the most scenic villages of Norway, and Nordmarka natural landscape area.
The sights of the Eastern Valleys are the Railway Museum in Hamar, XVII century Kengvinger castle, the Norwegian Forestry Museum in Elverum, the largest in Northern Europe open ice rink in Lillehammer.
The things worth seeing in Telemark, the birthplace of modern Alpine skiing, stretching along the southern coast of the country, are “The Lake Amusement Park” in Skien, the Berg-Krageroe Museum and a great number of small islands near Krageroe.
The old Hanseatic city of Bergen is one of the most picturesque places in the country and by the number of places of interest excels the capital much.
The Spitsbergen archipelago (Svalbard) deserves special attention, as more than half of its territory is occupied by wildlife preservations with the unique polar species of animals and the world greatest rookeries.
Troms is the country of islands. The city of Tromso – the capital of the region – is one of the leading environmental research centres: here the world northernmost university is situated.
The straight strip of Nordland between the Swedish border and the coast of the Norwegian Sea is the land of the Arctic Circle. Thousands of tourists visit the monument marking this line in the “Arctic Circle Centre” in Saltfjell.
The “Median Lands” of Trøndelag are the main agricultural region of the country. The capital of Sør-Trøndelag – Trondheim – is famous for St. Kliment`s and Nidaros cathedrals.
Tourism. The most popular seaside regions of Norway are Aust-Adger, Grimstad Gjestehavn, Lillesand Gjestehavn, Risør Gjestehavn and Skottevig Maritime Senter. Another - Stavern Gjestehavn - is situated in Vestfold region.
Diving is an extremely popular sector of tourism in Norway. Wonderful places for diving, allowing to get acquainted with the unique underwater world of northern seas, are located near the Lofoten Islands, Lilesand, Bergen, Elmeland, Brønnesund, Trondheim, and along almost the whole of the North Sea coast.
Norway has a number of ski resorts, such as Geilo, Hemsedal, Lillehammer.
Climate. The seaside areas due to the influence of Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Stream have temperate maritime climate (subarctic in the extreme north). In the interior areas, especially the mountainous ones, have continental climate, warmer in summer and cool in winter. The temperature of January varies from +2°C in the southwest to -12°C in the north; that of July – from +15°C to +6°C respectively, though sometimes the air warms up to +25°C even in the north. The annual amount of precipitation is from 300 mm in the east of the country to 3,000 mm on the western slopes of the mountains.
