Spain is a state in southwestern Europe occupying the best part of the Iberian Peninsula. It borders with France and Andorra in the north, with Portugal in the west. Its northern coasts are washed by the Bay of Biscay, eastern – by the Mediterranean Sea, western – by the Atlantic Ocean. The territory of Spain also includes several archipelagos, such as the Balearic and the Alboran Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, the Velez de la Gomera, the Alucenas and the Chafarinas, and the enclave cities Ceuta and Melilla in Morocco (northern Africa) as well. The total area of the country (including the islands) is 504,800 sq km.

Relief. Spain is the land of mountains and plateaus: more than 65% of the territory of the state lies higher than 500 m above sea level. Six major mountain ranges are higher than 3,300 m. The highest peaks are Pico de Aneto (3,404 m) in the Pyrenees and Mulhacen (3,478 m) in the Sierra Nevada on the continental part of the country. Pico del Teide (3,718 m) is on the Island of Tenerife in the Canaries.

Mountains. Spain is edged with mountains. In the north of the country lie the Pyrenees that separate the peninsula from Europe. The chain is 440 km long and 2,000 m high. The Sierra Nevada stretches along the southern coast. There the highest peak of the peninsula – Mulhacen (3,482 m) is situated. The territory of the country is the place of intersection of numerous mountain ranges, such as the Cantabrian Mountains with the Picos de Europa, the Central Cordilleras with the Gredos Massif, the Iberian Mountains and the Cordilleras of Betica.

Rivers. The major rivers of the country are the Tajo, the Guadiana, the Duero, the Guadalquivir and the Ebro. The Guadalquivir is the deepest and the only navigable river in Spain.

Lakes. Lakes are scarce in Spain. There are some small ones on the coast of the Gulf of Cadiz and the Mediterranean Sea. The largest of them are the Mar Menor to the southeast of Murcia near the Cape of Paloe, the Albufera in Valencia. In the province of Salamanca (the Northern Meseta) a small glacial lake Sanabria and the Trampal are situated.

National Parks and Reserves. More than 400 national reserves protect the major ecosystems of the peninsula and of the islands. The most well-known of them are Ordesa, Monte Perdido, Picos de Europa, Delta del Ebro, Ayguamoles del Emporda, Aygues Tortes y Lago San Mauricio, Garrocha, Casorla, Coto de Donana (Donana), Cabo de Gata, Sierra Nevada, the Canary Islands, etc.

Sightseeing. Madrid, the capital of the country, is the centre of art museums. Among them is Museo del Prado – one of the most famous museums in the world. Cultural and historical value belongs to the tower of the temple San Pedro el Viejo, the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza Villa and the City Hall, the Palacio Real and the surrounding gardens.

The city of Cuenca built in the Middle Ages was the “protection and centre” of the caliphate of Cordova. After being conquered by the Castile in the XII century it became one of the major centres of the Reign of Spain.

Toledo is a medieval city the architecture of which is a vivid example of fusion of diverse styles and trends of three cultures: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

A majestic fortress ensemble Alhambra in Granada rises above the Sierra Nevada, surrounded by cypresses and elms and serves a reminder of the Mauritanian past of the province. Alcazaba, the Nazrida Palace and wonderful Generalife Gardens have the world fame.

Valencia is the third largest city and the capital of the province of Valencia. It is also the homeland of paella and of the Saint Grail. One of the places of interest is the Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas in the baroque style.

Barcelona is the dynamic and elegant capital of Catalonia, full of architectural and historical contrasts. The aquarium of Barcelona is considered unique. At the end of the XX century Barcelona, owing to the 1992 Olympic Games, opened a new page of its “golden” history, showing the incredible beauty of its Miraculous Fountains.

Tarraco (Tarragona) was the first administrative, trading and business centre in the Roman Spain. The well-preserved forum and amphitheatre clearly demonstrate the wealth of the Roman city.

In old times Zaragoza was surrounded by walls of white marble and was called the “white city”. The Plaza del Pilar gathers architectural masterpieces of all epochs and styles: Torreon de la Suda built in the XV century on the place of the former residency of Mauritanian governors, the remnants of ancient Roman walls that once surrounded the city, the basilica Nuestra Senora del Pilar with amazing paintings of the arches and domes by young Goya.

Santiago de Compostela (A Coruna) is a famous among pilgrims place in the northwest of the country, being the symbol of the struggle of Christianity and the Islamic world.

Tourism. Spain offers various types of beach holidays along the whole of the Mediterranean coast and on the popular islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife and Fierteventura. Married couples can find a suitable cosy place in one of Spanish villages, and cheerful young people may have a jolly good time in the cities.

Ski resorts: the Pyrenees of Aragon, the Iberian Mountain System, the Cordilleras of Cantabria, the Pyrenees of Catalonia, the Central Mountain System.

Beach resorts: Costa Blanca, Costa Brava, Costa de la Luz, Costa del Garraf, Costa del Maresme, Costa del Sol, Costa Dorada, Cantabria, Costa Verde, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands.

Climate. Almost all of the territory of the state is situated in the subtropical zone. The hottest areas of the country are the southeastern coast and the Ebro valley near Zaragoza. The highest summer temperatures were registered in Andalusia. The average temperature in summer is +18 - +26°С, in winter – not less than +12°С. The average annual precipitation varies from 1,600 mm in the northwest and on the western slopes of the Pyrenees to less than 250 mm on the Aragon Plateau and in La Mancha.
