Tajikistan is a country in Central Asia. Tajikistan is situated in the Southern Pamirs and is a landlocked country. This is the smallest country in Central Asia. Tajikistan borders on Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in the north and west, China in the east and Afghanistan in the south. The area of Tajikistan is 143,000 sq km. Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan.

Mountains. Mountains occupy 93 per cent of the territory and more than half of the territory lies at an altitude of over 3000 m. In the north-east, the highest point of Tajikistan, Communism Peak, or Ismail Samani Peak (7,495 m), is situated.

The Pamirs is a mountain system in the south of Central Asia, which lies at the connection of spurs of other powerful mountain ranges in Central Asia, such as the Hindu Kush, the Kun Lun, and the Tien Shan. The highest summit of the Pamirs is Ismail Samani Peak (7,495 m). Other major peaks include Independence Peak, Abu Ali Ibn Sino Peak, Stalin Peak, Konstantin Kaufman Peak and Avicenna Peak.

Lenin Peak (before 1928 known as Kaufman Peak) is one of the “seventhousanders”, that is the highest mountain peaks of the former USSR. It is one of the highest peaks in Central Asia, found in the Pamir mountain system.

Korjenevskaya Peak is a mountain in the northern part of the Akademiya Nauk Range, 13 km of Ismail Samani Peak (Communism Peak). It is one of the four “seventhousanders” on the territory of the former USSR.

Rivers. The main rivers in Tajikistan are the Syr-Darya (in the north) and the Amu-Darya (the south), as well as the Vakhsh, the Kafirnigan, the Zeravshan and the Pyanj. Other rivers flowing through the country include the Muzduayreksay, the Bashgumbez, the Dushanbe-Darya, the Dushanbinka, the Varzob, the Kara, the Simigandj, the Shahdara and the Yakhsu.

Lakes. The most important lakes on the territory of Tajikistan include: Karakul, Sarez, Iskanderkul and Yashilkul. Other lakes include Kulikalon Lakes, Alaudin Lakes and the Kayrakum Reservoir.

Sightseeing. Tajikistan is one of the oldest countries in the world. The territory of modern Tajikistan was settled before 500 BC by Sogdians and Bactrians who created their states, Sogdiana and Bactria, well-known in ancient times.

The capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, is situated in the picturesque and fertile Gissar Valley, at an altitude of 750 to 930 m. It is one of the world’s highland capitals and one of the largest cultural centers in Asia.

Penjikent was one of the most developed cities in Central Asia in ancient times. Samples of Sogd architecture (5-7th cent.) are masterpieces, which define the role and the place of Tajik art in the common cultural heritage of the East.

Khodjent is one of the oldest cities of Central Asia, known since the 7th century. Situated in the north of Tajikistan, Khodjent attracts the attention of tourists thanks to its numerous medieval citadels and an ancient mosque, Sheikh Musleheddin’s mausoleum (17-18th cent.).

The Pamirs is known locally as Bam-i-Danya (“The roof of the world”). The Pamirs is the place which is the meeting place for the highest mountain systems in the world, including the Karakoram and the Himalayas in the south, the Hindu Kush in the west and the Tien Shan in the north-east.

Khorog is the capital of the Badakhshan autonomous region. The city is situated at an altitude of 2,000 m and literally scattered on the slopes of the Gunt River valley.

The Pamir Highway (the Pamir path) is special because it is the highest permanent road in the world. The route from Khorog to Osh along the Pamir Highway usually offers tourists a host of exciting experiences.

Tourism. A holiday in Tajikistan will make climbers feel on top of the world because they will be struck by a diversity of mountain ravines and slopes. This is the meeting place of the highest mountain ranges in Central Asia - the Tien Shan and the Pamirs, with heights ranging from 300 to 7,495 m. Indescribably splendid glaciers descend from the slopes of their peaks.

The Pamirs is a favourite place for climbers; it occupies the eastern part of the Pamir mountain system. The highest peak of the range, Ismail Samani Peak (Communism Peak), reaches 7,495 m in height. The surface of the western Pamirs is extremely uneven and has contrasting heights.

The well-known Kayrakum Reservoir is located near Khojent. It sprung up as a result of building a hydropower station on the Syr-Darya River. Its mild climate, its unusually beautiful nature and transparent surface of this man-made lake offer all the conditions for the development of active tourism – boating tours, vacation at the seaside, fishing and tours of archaeological sites.

The Ak-Suu area, located near Khojent, is a favourite place of pilgrimage for climbers. This mountain range possesses the beauty of untouched nature and includes unusual mountains, often higher than 5,000 m, which are composed of solid granite with small “hooks” and crevices, such as Ak-Su (5,355 m) and Blok (5,239 m).

The Fann Mountains is a popular area of tourism and mountaineering in Tajikistan. There are about 100 explored mountain passes here, ranging in height from 3,200 to 5,060 m (the Mirali Pass). At the heart of these mountains, there are about 30 lakes, the largest of which is Lake Iskanderkul. Lake Kulikalon is the most beautiful and picturesque, well-known for its unique play of colors. Fantastic rock bastions in the Karavshin area, in the heart of the Pamir-Alai Mountains, composed of solid granite and cut by vertical crevices and hoods, attract climbers from all over the world.

Rafting is equally fascinating in Tajikistan. Those who prefer this type of recreation will be pleased to know that there are a large number of turbulent mountain rivers in the area. Taking a ride along these rivers will bring huge pleasure to fans of extreme tourism.

Climate. The climate of Tajikistan is continental with large daily and seasonal air temperature fluctuations, low rainfall, dry air and low clouds. The average temperature ranges from 20°C to 0°C in January and from 0°C to +35°C in June, depending on the altitude.
