Thailand is a country in South-East Asia, situated in the south-western part of the Indochina Peninsula and the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. Thailand is bounded by Cambodia and Laos in the east, Myanmar in the west and Malaysia in the south. Thailand is washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea in the south-west and the Gulf of Thailand in the south-east. The total area of Thailand is 513,115 sq km.
Relief. Half of the country is covered by low-lying plains, the largest of which is the Menam Plain, situated in the basin of the Menam Chao Praia River, the main river country. The eastern part is covered by the Korat Plateau. In the north and west lie the Mountains of Thailand. The Tanya-Ntaundji is the central mountain range where the country's highest peak, Mount Doi Inthanon (2,595 m), is situated. Arable lands occupy 34 per cent of the territory, while forests and groves cover 30 per cent.
Rivers. Thailand has a dense network of rivers. Almost all the rivers begin in the northern mountains and flow into the Gulf of Thailand. The Menam Chao Praia River is the longest and most full-flowing river in Thailand and it plays a particularly important role in the life of the country. It is 1,200 km long. Along the eastern part and the north-eastern border of Thailand flows the Mekong River. The right tributary of the Mekong River, the Mun, is another important river in the country. Along the western border of the country flows the Salween River.
Lakes. There are few lakes in Thailand, the largest of which are Lake Kam (in the Mekong River basin) and Lake Thaleluang on the Malay Peninsula.
Lake Cheo Lan is one of the most interesting and beautiful places in the south of Thailand.
National Parks and Reserves. In Thailand, there are five national parks with a total area of about 8,000 sq km. The sights of the national parks include the Eravan Waterfalls (west of Bangkok), Thailand's highest mountain, Doi Intanon, and other interesting natural phenomena. Also, there are nature reserves in the Khunthan and Tanentaundji mountain ranges in the west of the country. In addition, unique nature reserves have been created on the islands in the Phang Nga Bay.
Sightseeing.
Bangkok, which translates as “the city of wild plums”, was founded by King Rama I in the 18th century. The city is famous for its unique architectural and cultural heritage. This is a mishmash of different elements - hundreds of Buddhist temples and palaces with gabled roofs, thousands of cars and thousands of ships on the canals crossing the city, persistent stench of exhaust gases and street braziers, cosy and small parks in the English style.
The world’s largest statue of Buddha is found west of Bangkok, near the town of Nakhonpathom (127 m high).
The northern part of Thailand has so far not been explored much by tourists, but it is the cradle of the Thai civilization, and an area of beautiful forests, waterfalls, colorful national holidays and dozens of ancient cities and temples.
Chiang Mai (700 km north of Bangkok) is the second largest city and the pearl of the country. Situated in a valley between the mountains 2,600 m high, the “old town” in Chiang Mai is surrounded by a strong defensive wall and a moat.
Nearby lies the mysterious city of Mehongson, which has the Wat Chhong Kham temple with ancient wall paintings - one of the oldest buildings in the country. Other major attractions include the Wat Prathat Don Kong Mu Temple, the Wat Kitti Wong Temple which enshrines Buddha’s holy remains, and the Wat Chong Klang Monastery.
5 km south of Chiang Mai lie the ruins of Viang Kum Kam, the earliest historical settlement in the area (around the 10th and 11th centuries).
Chiang Rai is a city that lies north-east of Chiang Mai and 785 km of Bangkok, the former capital of the state of Lanna Thai (“the kingdom of a million rice fields”). Today the city and its environs are also famous for their strikingly beautiful nature as well as numerous Buddhist temples.
North-east of Chiang Rai, on the banks of the Mekong River, lies another ancient capital, Chiangsen (Chiangsaen), famous for its temples, such as Wat Pra That Chom Kitti, Pra That Doi Tung, Chedi Wat Pa Sak and Chedi Luang, and its local history museum with a vast collection of exhibits.
Tourism.
A holiday in Thailand offers a variety of beach, sea and air entertainment opportunities, educational tours and safaris.
Washed by the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, the country offers its visitors a diversity of entertainment programs that meet the needs of different categories of tourists.
Nature provides Thailand with perfect conditions for diving. Luxurious coral reefs, underwater caves, exotic flora and fauna are found in abundance in the water areas of such resorts in Thailand as Phuket and Pattaya, the islands of Koh Samui and Sichang, Similian and Surin, Phi-Phi and Dok-Mai as well as the Ang Thong National Sea Park, where everyone can go diving and swimming with a mask.
However diving in Thailand is popular only during the diving season from December to June, while surfing in Thailand can be done all year round. Every year from September to November, there are downpours in Thailand, which alternate with sunny weather several times a day. They also bring strong winds much-awaited for all fans of water gliding. All types of sea resorts, either Phuket, or Pattaya, or Sichang, are ideal for surfing in Thailand.
Climate. The climate of Thailand is humid tropical and subtropical. These climatic conditions are due to the fact that most of the country lies within the tropical and subtropical zones and falls under the influence of south-western and north-east monsoons. The hottest months are April and May when the temperature is higher than +35°C. The rainfall reaches 1,000-2,000 mm per year (up to 5,000 mm per year in the mountains). Typhoons are frequent in summer and autumn.
