Zimbabwe is a state in the south of Africa. Zimbabwe borders with Zambia and Mozambique in the north, with Mozambique in the east, with the Republic of South Africa in the south, with Botswana in the southwest and in the west. The total area of Zimbabwe is 390,700 sq km.
Relief. Almost all of the territory of Zimbabwe is occupied by the plateaus of Matabeleland and Mashonaland 800-1,500 m high with the highest peak Inyangani (2,596 m). In the north the plateaus in steps lowers towards the valley of the Zambezi River, in the south – towards the Limpopo River. The central part of Zimbabwe is an open plateau 1,100-1,850 m high. The most lowered part of the country with the hottest climate is in the southeast, in the basins of the Sabi River and its affluent the Runde River and in the basin of the Mwenezi River (the affluent of the Limpopo).
Rivers and Lakes. The rivers of Zimbabwe are the Zambezi, the Limpopo, the Gway, the Sengwa, the Sanyati, the Hunyani, the Shashe, the Umzingwani, the Bubye, the Mwenezi, the Save, the Runde, and the Sabi. On many of these storage lakes were created, the largest of which is Lake Kariba. Only some parts of the Zambezi and the Limpopo are navigable. On Lake Victoria the famous Victoria Falls are located (107 m high and 1,500 m wide).
National Parks. Victoria Falls, Hwange, Matobo and other national parks abound with wild animals and astonish with the beauty of the landscapes.
Sightseeing. Harare – the capital of the country – has many unmatched wildlife sanctuaries worth seeing. One should also visit the National Gallery, the Kopdje Knoll, the Botanical Gardens and Mbaremusica market.
The Victoria Falls is one of natural wonders. Adrenaline amateurs can enjoy rafting, hang gliding and bungee jumping.
Hwange National Park was once the Ndebele royal family game preserve, and now is one of the richest sanctuaries in Africa with the area of 14,650 sq km.
Matobo National Park is a large sanctuary famous for the Matobo Knolls situated here which are considered a sacred place.
Matusadona State Park is located on the wild southern shore of Lake Kariba.
The Chinhoyi Caves amusement park is situated near the city of Chinhoyi and considered one of the most popular places in Zimbabwe.
Climate. The climate of Zimbabwe is subequatorial in the north of the country and tropical in the south. The average temperatures in summer (from December to March) do not exceed +25°C, in winter dry season (from June to August) +17°C. The average annual amount reaches 400 mm in the south of the country and 1,000 mm in the mountains. The maximum amount of rainfall is observed from November to March.
