After the Second World War the United States has been a key driver of systematization of cartographic materials. The area of interest included regions of Central and South America, where the United States actively cooperated with geographical service of the regional states.

In Brazil, in 1932 was founded Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, which by 1960 created maps of Brazil of large and small scales. Mapping in Brazil has been complicated by the huge size of the territory and the uneven distribution of the population, but programs fulfilled with the United States had brought results.

In 1946, was formed a research team Inter American Geodetic Survey (IAGS), which initiated a program MAPPLAN. As part of it US Army carried out basic geometric and photogrammetric works in all countries of South America, except Argentina and Uruguay. Complete geodetic basis became available in 1954. In Bolivia, in 1948, under the program MAPPLAN was created a series of maps in the scale of 1:25 000 and 1:50 000, and by the 1970s, the Bolivian territory was almost completely covered with maps of scale 1:50 000.

In other countries, local mapping organizations with the support of the United States were also actively engaged in mapping, making maps of their territories.
