Cartographic Section of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History in 1979 launched a new project aimed to create maps of scale 1: 250 000. Under this program, it intended to make maps of the whole western part of South America, as well as about 1,500 sheets of central and southern parts. Existing at that time national map series have been integrated into the program. First maps appeared in 1980, but implementation of the program lasted for decades.
