Armenia is a state in the south of Transcaucasia bordering with Azerbaijan in the east and southeast, Iran in the south, the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic in the southwest, Turkey in the west and Georgia in the north. The area of Armenia is of 30,000 sq km.

Relief. Armenia occupies the territory of the Armenian Highland. The relief of the country is mainly mountainous, consisting of numerous mountain ridges (about 47% of the territory), intermontane hollows, extinct volcanoes, laval plateaus and flatlands. 90% of the state is situated at 1,000 m above sea level and higher. The highest peak is Mount Aragats (4,090 m).

Mountains. The Armenian Highland is the middle of the three Foreasian Highlands. In the broad sense of the word the Armenian Highland includes the Small Caucasus which creates its northern border, the Eastern (Armenian) Tavr and Kurdish (Kurdistan) Mountains. The area of the Armenian Highland is about 400,000 km2.

Aragats is the massif in the west of the country, the fourth highest in the Armenian Highland and the highest in Armenia.

Agrydag is a mountain range in the central part of the Armenian Highland situated in the west of Turkey, to the south of the Van Lake. The range is 200 km long and up to 3,445 m high.

Bargushat range is a mountain chain in the Armenian Highland situated in the south of Armenia. It is the western branch of the Zangezur range.

Zangezur range is a mountain chain in the Armenian Highland about 130 km long. It stretches meridionally from the intefluve of the Terter and the Arpa rivers (to the north from the Vorotan) to the Araksayua valley. The highest peak is Kapudzukh (3,904 m).

There are also such mountains as Sisakatar (3,827 m), Naapet (3,510 m), Erndjak (3,362 m), Shaaponk (3,204 m), Salavard (3,167 m), Gokhtansar (3,144 m), Airisar (3,125 m).

Rivers. Such Armenian rivers can be singled out as the longest ones: the Araks, the Akhurian, the Vorotan, the Debed, the Hrazdan, the Aghstev, the Masrik, the Arpa, the Nakhichevanchay, the Alinjachay, the Gilianchay, the Terter, the Voghdji, the Megri.

Lakes. The largest lake in Armenia is Sevan, situated at 1,900 m above sea level in an intermontane hollow in the east of the country. Its surface is of 1,240 km2, depth of 83 m.  Cape Artanish (from the east) and Cape Noratus (from the west) jut out into the lake and divide it into Great Sevan and Small Sevan.

Other large Armenian lakes are Arpi, Akna and Sev.

National Parks and Reserves. Sevan National Park is the only in Armenia. It was created in 1978 to protect the homonymous lake and the surrounding areas.

Sightseeing. The capital of the state – Yerevan – is situated in the middle course of the Hrazdan river in the very heart of the Ararat valley. The precincts of the city abound in historical and cultural monuments.

30 km to the northwest of the capital is the city of Ashtarak with the Karmravor church built in the VII century.

On the left bank of the Araks river stands the first capital of Armenia and its most ancient city of Armavir, founded as a castle as long ago as the VIII century B.C.

Gyumri (former Leninakan) is the capital of the Shirak ashkhar and one of the most ancient cities of the country (known from the II century B.C.).

The southeastern parts of the country – Vayots Dzor and Zangezur – are severe and beautiful in their magnificent mountainous landscapes.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a historical region inhabited primarily by ethnic Armenians, which de jure is part of Azerbaijan, but de facto since December 1991 an independent republic under the auspices of Armenia.

In Artzakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) more than 1,700 historical-architectonic monuments are recorded.

Tourism. Armenian resorts Ankavan, Arevik, Arzni, Vanadzor, Djermuk, Dilijan, Tzakhkadzor and others are famous in the whole Transcaucasia for their wonderful landscapes, mineral springs and curative mountain air.

Just 10 km to the north of the capital is the famous spa resort Arzni, famed for its waters of sodium bicarbonate chloride type.

40 km to the north of Yerevan is the well-known mountain resort Tzakhkadzor. It is located in the picturesque valley of the Marmarik river at more than 1,700 m above sea level (1,900-2,100 m). It disposes more than 12 km of alpine skiing tracks.
